Times TV presenter Brian Banda forced to resign

Times television celebrated and maverick presenter Brian Banda has been forced to resign following accusation of professional misconduct.

Social media has been awash with reports that Banda resigned because of alleged soliciting of corruption.

But sources at Times indicate that Banda was asked by management to resign after  a catalogue of professional misconduct.

“It has been a mutual understanding to break apart,” said one of the sources at Times.

Corrupiton has been dismissed as a reason for  Banda’s departure but that he is accused of “serious errors of judgment”.

Banda, who served as press officer for former president Joyce Banda, has been hosting Times TV  talk show ‘Hot Current’ which is popular  in Malawi following the ‘truth telling’ discussion.

The program which features Times Group Editor-in-Chief George Kasakula is showing brave and substantive journalistic endeavours (often at great personal risk) and discussing matters of current which are hitting headlines, taking government into task on accountability and corruption.

The  Hot Current has been  attracting wrath of those wielding power recklessly, even criminally, with complete impunity and unaccountability as the program is putting them on spot with no holds barred critique.

The marverick award winning broadcaster has also been conducting Times Exclusive interview programme.

  2. This guy is dull. when he is presenting a programme he does it in mixed languages – English and Chichewa. Sometimes he would start a sentence in English and it in Chichewa and vise versa. You cannot tell whose audience is. If he chooses English the programme must be as such from start to the end and so if he chooses Chichewa. In most cases,as I have been following Hot Current it became clear to me that the subject of discussion was always initiated by George Kasakula. The guy could not come up with a well reasoned topical issue for debate. He deserved to go back to Capital Radio where there are no standards.

  7. Times group has been fighting with MRA for unpaid taxes. I believe chopping of Brian is an attempt to make mends with government. Brian is just a sacrificial lamp. On the other hand i listen to the interviews of Brian which i think he needed to act better.

  8. Brian Banda comes from Southern Region of Malawi and he joined a wrong media house, mind you Hon. Ken Lipenga was suppose to come to this media house but Chikadya and his group blocked him since Lipenga comes from southern region in Phalombe, Malawians go and check the hierachy of Times group, it favours only those from central Region of Malawi. Chikadya operates Times Group as his personal farm and due to this the company has drastically gone down and the departments which are operational currently are News Papers,

    Times Radio and Tv, All others have been closed the courier you know is not operational, Dzuka Publishing closed, Times Bookshop closed and we used to buy good toilet tissues closed. The board of directors of this company are always wrapped in a towel as if things are rosy at this place but not, Previously all vehicles for Times Group used to fuel their vehicles at Chikadya’s Wenela Filling station, why? Check the qualifications of some of the accountants of this company are given senior positions just because they come from central region.

    Ask yourself why the likes of Kachinziri and Kasakula sangachotsedwe from this company it is because they all come from central region, People of Malawi we hate the people of the north because are smart people, if there is a tribe in Malawi which is so tribalistic than all tribes is the Chewa tribe, mark my words had it been Hon. Ken Kandodo known this could have done away with Chikadya who has made this company fall as it is now. The chewas think that they are always better than any other tribe in Malawi thats why if you are against MCP you can not win as an MP on other parties tickets apart from MCP in all rural areas of central Region.

    1. Abwana Chikadya is the owner of Times groups just like Zodiac with Gospel Kadzako. It is his personal business indeed its not like MBC. So he has the right to pick the right people who are in line with his values. Still more I like Brian Banda starting when he was at Capital Radio. They have axed a brave and very influential man.

No one on earth will ever be able to erase the tribe from the face of the earth. Ask Adolf Hitler who once tried. It was him who ended not the tribe he was trying to erase. If you hate chewas, that is your problem not God’s problem. Chewas will be there until God’s time comes just like the lhomwes and other tribes in Malawi. I don’t see the link between the sucking of Brian and chewa people. Times is not chewa, it is a company and it is governed by rules and regulations. Whether you like it or not, Chewas will always be there and you will keep meeting them. You will never finish them as you wish. They are there because God wants them so as he does with the Lhomwes and other tribes.
      Your statements show that you are more tribalistic than chewas. What you know about Brian’s sucking is the output of something but you don’t know what the process was like. If you were rational enough, you could do a better research and find the root cause. This has shown that you are superficial, tribalistic,and irrational.

Chikadya serves as an Impi to Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani. In fact there are so many Chewas who have been demoted, fired, dismissed and had their services terminated there at the Times Group. I can challenge you that there had been periods when the company’s management and editorial hierarchy had been dominated by other tribes like Dr Lipenga when he was Editor-In-Chief, General Manager, Bakali Maulidi, the late Nyekanyeka, most recently the late Jika Nkolokosa, Fredrick Ndala, Brian Ligomeka, Bayana Chunga and the list is endless.   10. From Capital Radio ( when you were at your best and no surprise you won a US Govt scholarship) to a very surprise move to MBC, then back to Capital Radio, then to Peoples Party as JB Press Officer then to Times Group.
    You are a good interviewer and you are destined for greatness but stop politics and go back to MBC. You remind me of the great Dr Benson Tembo.

  28. In any profession being civil is good. No doubt Brian is good to Malawi audience but internationally, how he does his journalism is unprofessional. In civilized counties Brian would have been sued long time ago. He has scandalized many in the name of journalism. I do not support DPP but Brian showed no respect to DPP, DPP officials and the President himself. The president requires some form.of respect. I am not condoning poor performance in running our country by the current president though.

If it is error of judgement them its damn serious in that as a professional news reporter its means a lot one biased, unethical, etc which then puts all his so called hard hitting programmes into question.
