Toilet turned into a teacher’s house in Malawi

A Malawian teacher at Kanjedza Primary School in Blantyre hit newspaper headlines fors living in an out-of-use toilet due to a shortage of houses at the institution.

The Weekend Nation reported that the school’s head-teacher, Nellie Mkumba, said the teacher has been living in the sanitary facility since he got transferred from Kapeni Demonstration School, Blantyre.

But the paper shielded the teacher’s name.

“This school was established in 1960. But it appears government, at the time, overlooked the issue of teachers’ houses. And so, it has remained like that to date,” the head-teacher was quoted saying.

Ministry of Education public relations officer, Mafred Ndovi expressed ignorance about the predicament of the teacher but indicated that they are working on the matter.

“The ministry didn’t receive a provision for the construction of teachers’ houses in the current budget. So, chances that teachers’ houses may be constructed at the school are remote. Maybe in the next financial year.”

The paper reported that the teacher has since surrendered all his personal effects to friends and well-wishers for safe keeping while looking for a house to let.

  3. I feel sory 4 my nation. I think u leaders u r taking full advantage of us bcz we r poor. But knw that God sees us and will let us pass through these kinds of stituation.

  4. Mbyofo mbyofo Pitala is wasting time sign some graffiti in Lumbadzi corner and painting filthy corner in police cells while teachers are sleeping toilets. All those allowances would have built a modest house for such a poor soul in such an unappreciated profession.Shame indeed.

  7. Commentl lthink the headteacher has acase to answer.why allowed this mad teacher to use this toilet as his house? unless if she tell us that she was nt aware of this development.

  8. Hahahahahaha, kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, zili paMalawi pano. Don’t tell me this teacher and the headmaster are sane. Otherwise school imenyi anawo they are learning trush. MG might have no funds but it can tolerate such nonsense. The DEM, PEA, HM etc. should explain better.

  9. The teacher is not in right senses. No you cannot just accept such no sense.
    That’s abuse of employees.

He could have remained at his Kapeni house. Full stop.

  10. It’s embarrassing to hear that, how can a teacher be exempolary if he sleeps in a nuasanse, shame!

  11. Meanwhile ena akumalemba mma police cell zopanda nzeru.
MMANGIRENI NYUMBA UYU. HE IS LIVING HELL IN THOSE TOILET.
It is worse than that cell in Lumbadzi police Station.
Koma amwene mukamazaturuka mchimbuzimo muzaonetsese kuti mwalemba “I was here from……to……” And chaka ndi chaka kumapanga comemoration mwamva?

  13. It’s painful to be known by all the wrong reasons in the world. Why? Stupid politicians. Headless chickens.

  14. How do u expect them o survive if hey are going unpaid for more hat 7 months? Ye he government spending money on crazy celebrations…..

  15. Here the ploblem is a teacher himself.you can’t go to a new school without making arrangement for accomodation.that could have been the first thing to consider above all.

  16. Civil service reform ya apulofesa woyeee…kikikikiki!

Ayi ine basis simmalawinso mpakana APM akadzasiya kulamulira dzikoli, l am tired of this nonsense.

  17. Let Malawi recognize the role and importance of a teacher, we are what we are because we met a teacher somewhere. But it is unfortunate that when authorities want to reduce costs, they resort to a teacher. This is pitiful.

  18. The teacher himself is stupid. How can he move to a new place without arranging for accommodation? And he arrives there mma 7pm yet akudziwa kuti sanalongosole za malo ofikira. He expected others to be busy with him akafika usikuwo! When u get a transfer notice and u agree, first thing you search for accommodation in the new locality. You don’t relocate until something tangible has been identified. Zitsiru zina ndi a Head Teacher ndi administration ya school imeneyi. They were not supposed to allow this. Nothing was out of hand here otherwise he was just supposed to be sent back. Sometimes ndimadabwa mmene aziphunzitsi amaganizira. I doubt ngati ana akuphunzira zenizeni ma sukulumu. Something is wrong with this teacher mentally. I strongly believe this is something just a staged act and of course exaggerated. Stupid teacher, stupid head teacher. Fotseki

  19. The poorest country indeed.
Newly employed teachers r in there 7th month wth no pay…
    Slavery continues….

  20. When some say this country is the poorest others are still refusing the fact. Its true as we can see here.
