Woman arrested for ‘fake’ maize seed
Police in Dedza have arrested 28 year old woman, Catherine Nthala Kachipande after being found in possession of fake maize seeds for sale
According to Dedza Police spokesperson Edward Kabango,the suspect Catherine Nthala Kachipande was arrested Thursday afternoon after they got a tip from some well wishers that at a certain house which located at airfield there were people who were busy packing fake maize seeds
Kabango said when they arrived at the house they found the suspected fake seeds being packed in Monsanto brand and after thorough search police found 137 bags of 2kgs, 16 bags of 5kgs and 3 bags of 50kgs of Monsanto fake seeds
The suspect who is currently in police custody is expected to appear in court to answer the charge of counterfeit
In a related development Kapiri first grade magistrate court in Mchinji has sentenced 45 years old Kingsley Banda who hails from Lukwa village in Kasungu to 21 months Imprisonment r or to pay MK40,000 after being found guilty on the same charge of counterfeit of maize seeds .

Bravo to thepoluce and good Malawians. The fine is too little. It should have been Mk400,000. Fake seed has killed more people in lost yields than the judges think. The fine shoulder be based on the opportunity cost of planting such seed. Most will forego unknowingly 30 bags an acre for 5 kg of each fake seed bought by a farmer. Therefore each fake 5 kg bag of maize found should be fined at 30 bags multiplied by number of 5 kg of fake packets found multiplied by the prevailing commercial cost of the seed at ADMARC. In fact the cost of 5kg of fake seed is almost equal to the cost of 50 kg food maize. Please judges reassess your fines and jail terms.
A lot of Agrodealers do that. Ask the seed companies and STAM. They have a list of these unscrupulous dealers.
