A 16-year-old woman Alinafe Tembo is currently in police custody for allegedly stealing a four months old baby in Kasungu district.
The baby belongs to Mary Musa, 22, from Nkhuku village of Senior Traditional Authority Kaomba in the district.
Police in the district revealed the suspect , who diguised herself as pregnant, stole the baby after befriending the mother.
”On 11th January, 2016 the suspect at around 3 O’clock in the afternoon, found the complainant at her business place where she sells doughnuts,” explained Harry Namwanza Kasungu police deputy Public Relations Officer.
”The suspect bought two doughnuts and they started having a chat. Looking at how they had conversed, the complainant took the suspect to her house where they continued charting”.
Mwanza said the complainant decided to leave her baby in the hands of the suspect while she rushed to a maize mill.
Upon her return, she noted that the suspect had made away with the baby.
The law-enforcers managed to apprehend the suspect, and will appear before court soon.
Tembo has been charged with Child Stealing contrary to Section 167 of the Penal Code.
The offence attracts a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment.
