Avoid politicizing development, minister tells LL ward councillors

Local Government minister Kondwani Nankhumwa has told ward councillors to stop politicizing development projects if people are to benefit from them.

Nankhumwa: Development projects should not be politicised

Nankhumwa’s remarks come barely days after a Malawi Congress Pary (MCP) took the Lilongwe City Council to court after disagreements with fellow ward councilors in the allocation and distribution of money for road construction and rehabilitation.

Speaking when he launched the K1.8 billion Urban Roads Rehabilitation project for the City of Lilongwe, Nankhumwa said politicizing development works would only delay such projects.

He said the rehabilitation of the roads in the city would finish within three months if those involved work hard and there is unity amongst those involved in the rehabilitation works.

He took a swipe at Lilongwe City Council officials, saying in some cases they are to blame for delayed projects.

He said the council officials can do much better.

The council has been blamed for delayed projects and in some cases projects not well executed and this is not the first time that Nankhumwa has expressed concern over the council officials.
