Chakuamba recycles in DPP: Returns to frontline politics

Malawi’s veteran politician Gwanda Chakuamba who retired from frontline politics a couple of years ago has bounced back and expressed his commitment to President Peter Mutharika and his ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which he helped found.

The veteran politician made the announcement at a developmental rally Mutharika held in Nchalo Chikwawa on Friday 8th April, 2016.

Chakuamba now 81 said he decided to attend Mutharika’s rally on Friday believing it was a good platform to thank the President for the kind gesture he showed in serving his life by sending him to a South Africa hospital for medication the time he seriously got ill.

He therefore pledged to support Mutharika and serve as a member of his party until the day he will answer God’s call.

Having recovered from his illness, Chakuamba said God has kept him alive because he has unfinished business serving the Malawi nation.

Finally, he assured Mutharika that come 2019, DPP will sweep all parliamentary seats in the lower Shire districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa.

The former minister who hails from Nsanje himself has also advised all Chiefs from the lower states to support and rally behind Mutharika and his party.

Chakuamba is among the few respected politicians who have struggled and served the country since 1960’s.

He served as a cabinet minister in various portfolios from 1960 before his arrest in 1980 as he was charged with treason by the then ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the  one party state ruled by late Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Chakuamba was released in 1993 and after Malawi attained multiparty democracy in 1994, he served as leader of opposition in parliament.

He also served as a minister in late DPP founder Bingu wa Mutharika in 2004.

In recent years, Chakuamba admitted to have been living a destitute life due to financial problems a development that led to receiving constant threats of eviction from Malawi Housing Cooperation House (MHC) in a house he was living in Chimwankhunda.

At the pick of his political career, Chakuamba was a proud owner of farms, houses in Chigumula, Mount pleasant among other areas.

  6. Truth says:

Chakuamba is the one who mercilessly beat chiefs at 1993 MCP convention of 1973. He is an evil man. He has joined Peter Mutharika who is making the life of ordinary Malawians very difficult as he is dismally failing to manage the economy.

  7. PITY FOR THE OLDMAN PLEASE FOR YOUR RESPECT GO BACK AND REST, POLITICAL YOU STARTED THIS GAME LONGTIME AGO BUT YOU ARE STILL POOR IT WILL BARE YOU NOTHING YOU WILL DIE POOR .

  8. Ze Roberto says:

Chakuamba is one politician who has no morals. It could be just one of the worst case scenarios we see if this dude was allowed to be any closer to becoming a state president. A guy who has dismally failed to manage his own personal life. But we know why he is making all this hogwash. He wants to find someone who will buy him a descent coffin. Malawi politics become more adulterated with the mention of the likes of Chakuamba.

  9. Advisory Committee says:

Gwanda is a waste of time now

  10. Winston Msowoya says:

Gwanda Chakuamba is not only a beast incarnet, but he is also a moving Komodo dragon.I couldn’t expect Chakuamba could again contemplate rejoining politics the way how he was beaten up on 10th Sept,1964 in league with his friend in evil A.Muwalo for siding with Mphonongo Banda during the famous Cabinet crisis that plunged our then newly independent nation.Indeed,to me who was there when the two friends were brutally manhandled by radical youth supporters of Masauko Chipembere and his comrades, thought that Gwanda was dead. When he was released from prison on trampled treason case which he served for 11years after multi- party elections defeated the blood-drenched MCP.After release on pressure from exiled patriots,to our astonishment,Chakuamba rejoined the MCP and became its President for a while. Now he is courting for support to join DPP a replica of the MCP.I would not brush aside when I hear Chakuamba has joined DPP because he has no political excellency no difference from late Chihana. To conclude, this is the political culture that has been in effect for the last 52 years and this has completely dominated the political landscape hence, the lack of political correctness.

Dr Felix Lombe kindly finish the autobiography that you have of this man called Gwanda. He can then die peacefully

  12. Mlauzi says:

“You can fool some people some time but you can’t fool all the people all the time” Bob Marley. Mbuya your time is up and we all know you have nothing to offer this country. You had your time and now it’s time to prepare to face your maker. You had money, you had power and even women. You were compensated handsomely when you came out of jail. I don’t want to mention the atrocities you committed. My free advise is God has given you time please make use of it. Amen

    Chakuamba Joins frontline Politics

Thats okay. Him and Mutharika will die together within this year.

    Good riddance !!!!!!!!.

  15. Mmalawi says:

Chakuamba story is a sad tale of a man who has never learnt any lesson in life. He has been everything in politics including being President of the MCP at a time when the party had abundant finances. He was a minister and we all know how handsomely ministers are rewarded financially and otherwise but he eventually ended up a destitute. And after his release from prison, he was also handsomely compensated. Amangwetu, is that a man you can call successful?
Chakuamba is a real shame and waste of space. I don’t think anybody can listen to such a useless moron

  16. kanchenga says:

No.8 Point of collection. In 1989 while Chakuamba was still in prison l worked for Agriculture Management and Consultancy Service a section of National bank dealing with Agric. Mr Chakuamba’s farms were run by this organisation and he was making a lot of money. His manager was a white man called Chris Hope. He also had a few businesses running so that when he was released, he was able to live comfortably. Dr Banda may have been a bad person as the Muluzis would like people like you to believe but please be better than him by not accusing him wrongly and blaming him for your failure. Most of us who lived during that time are not destitute we understand our environment and react accordingly. Mr Chakuamba allowed temporary situations to dictate his direction in life. When those situation melted away he was left bear. That’s why he is running to APM. Human grace is what he is looking for instead of God’s grace. Inslaving himself. He live cheaply and will die cheaply cheating poor souls like yours.

  17. Mandevu Waluza says:

Why not just resigning like what Tembo has done? Chakuamba is a failure. That is why is living in poverty.
APM mupaseni ndalama mbuya uyo akapume. Chipani chimene amasapota Mbuya sichinayambe chawinapo. Anali kumbali kwa Joyce Banda ndipo analephera. Watch out APM ameneyo wasauka nde akafuna kangachepe. Chonde muthandizeni.

  19. Emmanuel Chimphamba says:

I agree with the Analyst in 2. I saw Chakuwamba sleeping in a PP vehicle at Fatima during the last campaign days. I felt a pity for him. Failure to say goodbye to things. This is not newsworthy at all. During the last elections people in Nsanje voted for Mutharika despite Mbuya’s support for Madame Banda

  20. Lucas says:

Chakwamba sazatheka, akati ziiii! Ndalama zamvuta, akavumbuluka ndiye kuti wafumbatidwa ndalama. Maboma onse a matipate wadyako ndalama eeee! Zaka 81 pumani gogo musalimbane ndi ndale nthawi yanu itatha mwachokera kutali.

  21. Ndaziona Banda says:

Call me crazy but to be honest, it is DPP as a party that has lost touch with reality. To me personally, I feel Chakuamba has done nothing wrong wangopita kumene Khola lawola. Anyway, the current government if full of old people including the president himself. Hence the reason they are entertaining him, no surprises here. Typical of our politicians. It’s all up to us Malawians to change in the way we vote . My prayer to God is that come 2019 we should vote people into government that have substance not so inept like the current calibre. Sometimes I wish there was a way we could speed up time so that we go to the polls as quickly as possible and get rid of these recycled politicians.

  33. Debude says:

Is it true that to day Malawians are wondering where Chakuamba’s wealth went, is it not the MCP led government that confiscated all his property? I remember Kamuzu taking one of his massive cattle ranch in the lower Shire, his house on the Chikhwawa road was one of the properties they took.
When he was incarcerated one of his nephews was undergoing an officer cadets course at Sandhurst in the UK but was called back immediately his uncle fell out of favour with the Mkango. Even if it were you, how could you support yourself in such conditions mainly after getting releasing due to the compassionate stance from cheMuluzi? Surely it is high time Chakwera and company returned all that belonged to Mbuya. Kodi ndi zoonadi zoti aMalawi sitichedwa kuyiwala eti? What a shame, much as the guy has his own bad and filthy side if a story to tell as well.

  34. Ze Roberto says:

    Zovuta ku commenta! Tingangochimwapo apa.

  35. Frazier says:

I think we all should learn from this. Chakwamba, is one of the best politicians our country has produced.

He served the country in many different ways and capacities. However, it’s hard to believe he’s broke.

Where did all those farms, mount pleasant houses, chigumula houses, you name them, gone to.

I don’t think they all vanished into thin air, there must be something that really fueled all these properties and monies to disappear.

It’s a common phenomenon in our African culture to spend like there’s no tomorrow.

At his age, he should have been enjoying at one of his farms and look back to all he did for the country.

It’s embarrassing to imagine him staying in an MHC house in Chimwankhunda.

    Let’s watch out Malawian politicians,
    Just my observation.

  39. The Analyst says:

    O…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..O
“The two most important days in your life are the day YOU ARE BORN and the day YOU DISCOVER WHY.” – Mark Twain

    . . . Sadly . . .
Although many people are aware about how important the day they are born is, and seen staging birthday parties and stuff; many people die not knowing why they were born. As such, they live a chaotic and random life of experimenting and die such.
    . . . I quote . . .
“Having recovered from his illness Chakuamba said God has/had kept him alive because he has unfinished business serving the Malawi nation.” – (5th Paragraph)

. . . How many of us would concur with Chakuamba and thus believe that Chakuamba has unfinished business serving the Malawi nations?
. . . Who believes Chakuamba can best see off his last days or months or years serving Malawians?
    . . . And in what capacity?
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
If people care to cup-up their ears, and listen to adventures of Chakuamba during the one-party rule; they will hear stories of sadness, of atrocities e.t.c
. . . Its just sad that Chakuamba wasted his youthful-hay-days drinking, gambling and who knows what else; but I believe Chakuamba would better see off his last days cleaning up and putting his house in order – ready to meet his Maker.
. . . Coz though nobody knows who departs next; old age has been known to be one of the reasons why the eye-lids forever hug each other – never to separate again. And he is old.
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
. . . Otherwise, if he still believes his purpose is not yet accomplished having been everything he could manage to be – MP, minister, a father, a businessman, a landlord, a farmer, a govt employee e.t.c, the probability that he is lying to himself is higher than high.
    . . . Sadly . . .
Although it is sometimes OK to lie to other people, the worst thing any person can do, as far as the art of lying is concerned; is lie to him/herself. And Chakuamba is.
