Malawi commemorates Remembrance Day: Appeals for help
Malawi will on Sunday join the rest of world in commemorating Remembrance Day, which was set aside to remember those who lost their lives during the two World Wars of 1914 – 1918 and 1939 – 1945.
Secretary for Defence, John Bisika says in a statement made available to Nyasa Times that the State President, Joyce Banda will grace the occasion which will be characterized with parades and prayers at Zomba War Memorial Tower.
Bisika says two other subsidiary parades and prayers will be held at Lilongwe and Mzuzu Cenotaphs.
“At all the three venues the parades and prayers will start at 10:30a.m.”, he says
During the functions, Bisika says, a two minute silence will be observed to honour those who lost their lives during the two wars.
People of goodwill are asked to contribute in cash or kind during the remembrance week “to allow the Commonwealth Ex-service League of Malawi (CELOM) assist the war veterans who are now old and need help in many ways”.
Some of these war veterans live in the war Memorial Homes at Cobbe Barracks, Kamuzu Barracks and Moyale Barracks.
