Malawi designer Alfonso finally departs for Barcelona
Call it an advanced exposure for the country’s fashion designs as the one of our local and experienced designer, Lilly Alfonso left the country for Spain to participate in the first edition of Africa fashion week Barcelona (AFWB).
Alfonso carries the country flag to Spain where she is expected to showcase her ten piece collection at the fashion week which starts Thursday 13th June to Saturday15th.
According to the Lilongwe-based designer, her clothing would purely be made of local fabric manufactured by Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons.
Organisers of the fashion event indicates that about 11 designers are expected to showcase their artwork.
AFWB is a platform for fashion and accessory designers from all African and Afro-American countries. It is also open to designers of all nationalities, whose designs are inspired by Africa. It will include runway shows and vendor exhibition according to its website.
From Spain, the fashion designer heads to one of the world’s fashion hubs, Paris, France for the World Fashion Week pre-event.
Lilly
‘Lilly Alfonso’ is a fashion design label that has evolved over the years to become one of the top fashion labels in Malawi. The whole phenomenon was born out of Lilly’s pure passion as a fashion designer, having discovered her passion for fashion at a very early age.
Despite the low level of development in the Malawi Fashion industry, she moved against the tide until the year 2010 when she won the Malawi Fashion Edition, popularly known as FAME, as the best fashion designer.
Lilly has been an inspiration for many women in Malawi with her clothing designs which remain current on the market trends and she possesses vast creative techniques, having a strong eye for colours, fabric, trim and embellishments.
Her work is a mixture of ethnic style with western inspiration. The first ever Malawian to earn a place to showcase her exquisitely creative designs at Africa Fashion Week London, Lilly is also involved in interior decorating for both houses and office.
