Malawi leader Mutharika hails Veep Chilima for swiftly responding to floods

President Peter Mutharika has hailed his Vice, Saulos Klaus Chilima for swiftly responding to floods which hit people of Mtandire in Lilongwe last Friday.

Chilima briefing Mutharika at Mtandile the flooded area

Professor Mutharika said Dr Chilima’s urgency and swiftness to the disaster ensured that those affected receive assistance in good time.

Speaking when he visited people who were affected by the floods which hit parts of Mtandire, Area 47, 49, Nankhaka and Mgona in Lilongwe, the President said all the people who lost their property will be assisted to begin afresh.

‘I was pleased to receive a report from the Vice President about the flood situation after I had sent him to assess the situation,’ he disclosed

‘That kind of spirit is a spirit of umunthu. When people have problems we help them.’

Speaking earlier, Vice President Chilima bemoaned the tendency by some stakeholders who are withholding the aid that should be distributed to the flood victims.

Almost 2,200 people were affected by the floods which hit when the Lilongwe river burst its banks after close to 7 hours of heavy rains.

Over the weekend police managed to find three dead bodies from the Lingadzi River who drowned due to the flooding water.

The three deceased were Bakili White, 28, from Mawere Village, Traditional Authority (T/A0 Kachere in Dedza, Hasting Banda, 26, of Chigoneka Village in T/A Njewa of Lilongwe and Kondani Jackson from Nsanje district.

The three drowned while attempting to rescue two young boys who were stranded after being trapped by the floods.

Flood victims include  under five children, women, college students, secondary school students, primary school learners and elders.

giving credit where it is due! that’s a commendable and a welcome development!!

I’m surprised not amused that many people are not commenting on this story. It is true that Malawians though seen as cheerful and good people, they like to see bad developments in their country. When the vice president did not speak in Salima, many people commented. Why don’t you do the same on this one where the president is recognizing and saying that what his vice did is ‘umunthu’? Any way this is Malawi where everything is politicized.
