Malawi lose to Benin in Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Malawi lost narrowly 0-1 to Benin in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations second-round first leg qualifiers  at the Stade de l’Amitie in Cotonou.

According to BBC Sport report, Benin again relied heavily on West Bromwich Albion midfielder Stephane Sessegnon. He struck their only goal in the 19th minute to earn a 1-0 win over Malawi .

Malawi will be without injured Platinum Stars midfielder Robert Ng’ambi whereas Bloemfontein Celtic have refused to release striker Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango and defender Limbikani Mzava.

The match ended with both teams reduced to ten men.

Red cards were shown to Benin’s Badarou Nafiou and Malawi’s Frank Banda for an incident in the 84th minute.

The winner over two legs between Benin and Malawi will make group A comprising seeded Mali, Ethiopia and Algeria for a place at the 2015 finals in Morocco from 17 January to 8 February 2015.

The second leg will be played in Malawi on the weekend of August 1-3.
