Malawi teams punished for referee assault
Malawi’s second tier league teams Evirom United, Mangochi Police and Ndirande Icons have been penalised by the country’s Southern Region Football League (SRFL) for assaulting referees in separate incidents.
SRFL Vice-General Secretary Kingsley Simbeye said Evirom were fined K90,000, docked six points while players Frank Kadammanja and Mayamiko Kalima were suspended for seven games with McPherson Fumulani and Steve Dairi for the rest of the season.
In another similar incident Mangochi Police threw the ethics to the dogs when the displayed indisciplined behaviour.
The Mangochi Police were also punished by a K40,000 fine while players Gilbert Chisambo and Forbes Machila suspended for seven games.
Ndirande Icons were also fined K55,000, docked six points with players Tamimu Mwadini, Danvelo Chapola and Emmanuel Mpina suspended for the rest of the season.
Simbeye said the punishment were meted out to enforce discipline and sanity in the behaviour of players and officials.
He said the three teams committed serious offence by displaying acts of unsportsman behaviour, breach of fairplay.
“If a team is not satisfied with the performance of a referee there are proper channels they need to take but certain not taking the law in their own hands,” Simbeye said.
Evirom director Emmanuel Viola said the team would look at the verdict critically before deciding what course of action.
The teams are required to pay the fines before their next fixtures.
All the teams have no fixtures this weekend which will give them some space to honour the fines.
