Malawi U-20 launches Cosafa campaign Friday: Goals gallore at Day 1

 The 2016 Council for Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Under 20 Championship got underway on Wednesday 7th December 2016 with 16 goals scored in the opening three matches plyed at the Moruleng Stadium.

The hosts South Africa were the highest scorers after mercilessly defeating Lesotho 8-0 to go top of Group A while Zambia were second highest scorers following a 5-1 thumping over pre-tournament favourites Zimbabwe.

Swaziland also registered a 2-0 win over Botswana to go second of the log standings in Group A.

Action continues today (Thursday) with two Group C matches and a single match from Group D.

Seychelles play against Mauritius while Angola take on Sudan in Group A.

Guests Democratic Republic of Congo open ther campaign with a tricky fixture against Mozambique.

Both games will be played at the Mogwase Stadium.

The promising Malawi Under 20 side launches their campaign against Zambia on Friday 9th December.

The Junior Flames under the mentorship of their Head Coach Gerald Phiri will be on the field of play led by their experienced Captain Mike Mkwate who back home plays for elite League Champions Nyasa Big Bullets.

Before their departure to South Africa on Monday, coach Phiri said he was a satisfied man with the way preparations were carried out and expressed confidence to do better.

“The preparations have gone well and we are ready for the showdown,” said Phiri.

The team makes a return after a break for a couple of years.

There best finish was was in 2003 when they reached the finals but lost to Zambia 4-2 through a decider in Botswana.
