Malawian cop freed on bail over wife battering
Police constable Clement Banda has been released on bail by Midima Limbe Magistrates Court after he was nabbed for assaulting his wife.
Banda, who is officer at Njuli Police Post was arrested and remanded at Chichiri Prison last month for battering his wife, Pelegia Kanyambita 26.
The court granted the bail with a bond of K5,000 cash and one surity.
But according to Southern Region Police spokesperson, Nicholas Gondwa, Banda was forced to spend a night Limbe Police cell after failing to provide the surity on Tuesday.
Banda was charged with assault occasioning on actual bodily harm. He is said to have battered his wife of three years in January this year over family issues.
The wife was later admitted at Chiradzulu District Hospital. She was taken care by her grandmother, Ethel Matengo.
In an interview with one of local newspapers, The Weekend Times last month Kanyambita complained that Banda assaulted her on January 13th after his sister left their eight months unattended.
She claimed Banda was a cheat and overprotective as he had barred her from going to church or having friends.
”I have endured this for far too long. My husband has been roughing me up for a while now, and he always boasts that he can do whatever he wants with me because he is a serving police officer. Imagine i have an eight-month old baby i delivered through ceasarian section but, just five weeks after i delivered he started beating me up,” she lamented.
She said Banda started beating her the time she confronted him over an alleged affair with another woman.
