Malawi’s Kabaza’ charger ‘scientist’ in global innovators competition

A scientist from the Physics Department, Chancellor College, a constituent college of the Malawi University (Unima), has been shortlisted for this year’s Global Scientific Innovators Award.

Mixon Faluweki, a third year student pursuing Bachelor of Education Science degree, majoring in physics, developed a bicycle charger, which he named the ‘Padoko Charger’.

His innovation allows people who use bicycles for transport to also use it for charging their cell phones, power their radios or mp3 players, and also recharge their torch/lamps.

The  Padoko charger has been warmly accepted by people in rural areas who use bicycles for transport and especially those people who run kabaza business.

The innovation uses very few components and has low running costs which make it comparatively cheap. It fully charges a phone within a short time.

His innovation will greatly reduce the running cost of sing cell phones by cutting down the money spent for charging the phones.

In view of this development, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and GIST Tech-I selected his innovation alongside other 65 innovations from a total of 502 applications worldwide, to compete for this year’s Global Scientific Innovators’ Award.

Mixon is the only Malawi’s ambassador in the completion. The competition has now entered a voting phase where 30 contestants out of the selected 67 will proceed to the finals in Morocco.

Malawians have opportunity to see one of their own winning the grand prize and be on the world scientific map by voting for Mixon Faluweki online daily until 1st October, 2014.

To vote, follow the link: https://review.wizehive.com/voting/aaaspublicvote/25831.

“People can vote once every 24 hours. They can even use either e-mail address or a Facebook account to create voting account. However, when using an e-mail account they should remember to verify through inbox by clicking on the link sent by wisehive, otherwise the vote/s will not be counted. Verification is done only once,” explained Faluweki.

Applied science at its best! Well done man, you sure will solve an important problem and make a difference in peoples lives. I have voted already for you and good luck!!!

  8. Elias Chimwaza says:

I knew u will reach this far Bro ……..keep it up!!!

  10. jolinjo says:

well all i can sayis what the other guy said….patent it man!
by this i mean every working part in the unit.
or else they will just change one two things and say is not copied
    i wish you well……..
neccesity is indeed the mother of invention

  11. Eugenior says:

Make sure you get it patented otherwise you’ll be robbed off this great innovation.
    “Thumbs up”……

  19. Malawian Patriot says:

Youn man…do not be taken up by the award. Please take the following advice seriously. 1.
*Patent your product soonest possible. 2. Contact helpful Malawian investors on 0999661361…these guys can help you finance your idea for mass production. Lastly but very important advise…never take your innovation to China for mass production

  20. kukhala says:

A KANYIMBI YOU ARE LIAR OR EVEN JEALOUS. THIS CHANCO HAS ENHANCE THE TECHNOLOGY PERIOD. THE SAME HAS EVOLVED OR SAY ENHANCED FOR EXAMPLE COMPUTERS, CELLPHONE ETC. A MALAWI NSANJE BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  21. xmlw says:

Well done Mixon. Make sure you patent your invention ASAP!

  22. malema says:

In Good hard work of kabaza, some are taking chances to try their lucks on poor people…

Anyway……Good technological Luck for Malawi especially that Chanco scientist ripping his harvest on the sweat of poor Malawians-Kabaza Group thus not fair while the people of Zimbabwe are fighting for the State Presidency of Robert Mugabe who is 90 years old and has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980…

Grace Mugabe is now Leader of ZANU-PF Womens League taking active Politics!

  23. Marcus says:

Why do Malawians delight in belittling others? If its nothing this guy has done why wouldnt you be the first to bring this to Malawi? ….Shame! thts why we dont move forward nsanje too much….congrants bro keep it up. There is no one on earth who can lie to you that he has brought a new concept altogether, concepts are copied and redeveloped to come up with better ones

  24. makito says:

So that AAAS and GIST are daft to nominate this innovation. You guys know about dynamos but did nothing to make life for many better? Ask yourselves twice and you will realize that you are normal people, this guy is innovative.

  25. thox says:

Enanu kuyamikira kumavuta eti, it’s true a bicycle has a dynamo which generate electricity but why didn’t you think to connect it to a changer?

yes, many of us can do that but him has done it. congrats man, pitirizani enawa asiyeni zawo zithera m’maganizo

  26. thoxy says:

Thus the type of school we need osati kumangothamangira ma allowance m’ma office mu. We need school rightly applicable.

  27. Blessed Banda says:

People comment too much on politics. Scientific innovations are only understood by fwe. GGOD WORK Continue thinking and apply theory into practice.

  28. andy molika says:

Why are people not commenting on this good innovation. Why not congaturate this fellow malawian. Tisamathamange kulemba maganizo opusa pa zinthu zambiri zimene zili za ndale

  29. Anabanda says:

New in Malawi but in other countries zinayamba kalekale.

  30. the abductor says:

But it just looks like the same bicycle dynamo which produces 12 Vts or 6 there about and all you need is a step up transformer and mount a normal outlet socket where a charger can be connected. the dynamo self regulates output power internally. no big issue.

However, congratulations for the innovation and initiative.

  31. Mulopwana Wa Mamwene says:

    Good news for Malawi

  32. madzimba chengeta says:

great innovation mate.wish you all the best

  33. Kanyimbi says:

Palibe za innovation apa. This is just copyright and the boy needs to be arrested. Bicycles have Dynamos which generate electricty. So which innovation is here? Poor collage boy even that boy Kamkwamba from Kasungu is wiser than this boy from Chanco.

    1. inkosi says:

      kkkkkkkkkk mwatero eti!!!!!!!!

      1. Sho? says:

        Mr /Ms Kanyimbi bwanji? kkkkkkkk
Dont worry he is trying to operationalise the innovation in our context….an applied or incremental innovation rather than a radical one,… thats the language in science, technology and innovation studies..

    2. CHIDYAONGA says:

OR COUNTRY IS FULL OF MBUZI
THIS WAS FORM 4 PHYSICS IN OUR TIME,NOW ITS INOVATION

WIND MILLS ARE 400 YEARS OLD IN MALAWI TIKUTI NEW DISCOVERY AND GO TO TOWN ABOUT IT,
