MEC suspends reopening of registration centres in Chikhwawa

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended the reopening of voters registration centres in Chikhwawa.

In a statement signed by chairperson Justice Maxon Mbendera, MEC said the decision to suspend the re-opening has been made due to ‘the situation on the ground.’

The statement, however, does not indicate the situation in question.

But the statement further said the centres, which were earmarked for reopening, were covered in phase one of the registration exercise and were supposed to be re-opened for one or two days from December 14 to 15 2013.

Justice Mbendera issued the statement

“The decision has been made to review the situation on the ground. After the review, the commission will advise all stakeholders and the general public whether there will still be need to re-open the centres or not.

“The centres were supposed to re-open on 14th December 2013 for one day except for Kakoma which was scheduled to open for two days from 14th to 15th December, 2013,” reads the statement in part.

MEC is currently implementing the final phase of the registration exercise which has also seen the commission opening registration centers in some university colleges.
