Mutharika honours league sponsorship – SRFL
President Peter Mutharika has paid the sponsorship for the Southern Region Football League (SRFL) as he earlier promised that he would give the full package soon after the campaign period.
SRFL General Secretary George Mpagaja earlier expressed concern that two months after the league finished, Mutharika, was playing a hide and seek game over the payment of the prizes effectively making champions Chikhwawa United joining the elite TNM Super League without receiving their K1 million prize money.
Mpagaja, Northern and Central regions’ women football leagues expressed fear that would have been difficult to get their prizes after the polls if Mutharika fails to be elected State President.
Mutharika sponsors the leagues to the tune of K5 million (US$12 107) each.
But barely two days after being sworn in as Head of State,Mutharika honoured his pledge.
“The prize money has been paid and we shall proceed to pay the winners now,” confirmed the league’s chairperson Trouble Kalua.
According to Kalua, President Mutharika through his personal aide Ben Phiri, has pledged to continue bankrolling the league.
