Police arrest 36 in sweeping exercise, confiscate medical drugs
Malawi Police in Blantyre on Wednesday arrested 36 people on various offences and confiscated stolen government drugs during a sweeping exercise.
The 36 have since been charged with various offences ranging from illegal possession of medical drugs, theft, touting and rogue and vagabond.
Blantyre police assistant Public Relations Officer, Andrew Mayawo told Nyasa Times that they have arrested Agness Chilongo, 72, for being found in possession of government medical drugs.
Chilongo was found in possession of 58 packets of Cotrim, 84 packets of Co-trimoxazole, 38 packets of Diclofenac Sodium, 28 assorted bottles of medical drugs.
“She was arrested yesterday morning at around 11:30. During the exercise our officers went to her house and managed to seize the said drugs,” explained Mawayo.
During interrogation, Chilongo claimed to have been assigned by the an NGO to sell the drugs; however, there is no official document to back up her claims.
Among others arrested are Evance Nsmacha who is suspected of breaking and theft; Levison Bisiwick aged 19 and Emmanuel Stone, 18, who were found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen or wrongly obtained; Ben Nyirenda, 18, and MacDonald Maunde aged 22 who were found with Ecco TV screen.
Mayawo disclosed that 22 of the arrested have been charged with touting while six of them have been charged with rogue and vagabond.
The suspects are expected to be in court soon.
