Some People’s Party (PP) gurus are panicking over the coming to Malawi of businessman Osward Lutepo by implicating him in the attempted murder of Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo on September 13, 2013.
An insider who is privy to the Mphwiyo shooting investigation was reacting to Nyasa Times story which said Lutepo had a hand in the shooting of Mphwiyo through a court affidavit by one of the suspected assassins – Charles Chalonda.
“The truth of the matter is that when Lutepo announced that he would be coming to Malawi and will cooperate with the authorities on the current cash gate investigations, some PP officials are panicking and they are trying everything possible for him not to come because they know he will expose them,” said the official.
Lutepo , a senior ruling PP official and aspiring lawmaker in Kasungu, is scheduled to arrive in Malawi this week from Far east where he claims he was on a scheduled business trip.
“The affidavit in question is an arrangement by those implicated in the shooting of Mphwiyo and the looting at Capital Hill to divert attention because we came across this issue in our investigation but we ruled it out after finding no evidence. We know who did this and even the victim (Mphwiyo) has given us all the clues and we are close in netting the suspects,” said our source.
Investigations reveal that Pika Manondo is believed to have hired the people to assassinate Mphwiyo.
Further investigations reveal that Manondo is a close associate of a top PP politician (name withheld) and former Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara.
Manondo is currently on an Interpol alert for the attempted murder of Mphwiyo.
On Friday, Police searched the house of Kasambara in Lilongwe in connection with the shooting of Mphwiyo.
According to a warrant of search, issued on October 31st 2013 by the Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe directed police officers to search for a Mercedes Benz motor vehicle and motor vehicle number plates.
Kasambara is one of the senior ministers that President Joyce Banda fired after she dissolved the Cabinet last month following the startaling revealtions of the Capital Hill looting.
While Lutepo was allegedly used as a conduit of stolen public funds announced last week that he would be going back to Malawi and will cooperate fully with authorities on the investigation.
Soon after Mphwiyo’s shooting government said he was targeted because of his fight against corruption and fraud, but other reports have revealed an existence of a syndicate that has been swindling government through illegal encashment of government cheques.
Other reports have indicated that the shooting was a result of a deal gone sour and linked the incident to senior government officials including ministers.
Mphwiyo was shot three times by unknown assailants a recently as he was entering his residence which is located in Area 43, Lilongwe.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
