Standard Bank kits out Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi

Zambia bound Tessam Netball side on Wednesday got a timely morale booster ahead of the Confederation of University and College Sports Associations (Cucsa) Games after Standard Bank Malawi donated a complete netball uniform to the team at a ceremony held at the bank’s head office in Lilongwe.

Standard Bank marketing officer Maria Bauleni said the donation underlined the bank’s commitment to develop sports in the country.

“Standard Bank has been associated with the development of sport in the country for decades and we are also sponsoring a knock-out cup (The Standard Bank Knock-out Cup). That is why we did not hesitate to assist in a small way when we were contacted at very short notice by the Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (Tessam),” said Bauleni.

Bauleni, who once played for the Tessam netball team during her days at Polytechnic said it was important for the girls to be presentatble  as they represent Malawi.

“When a team is looking good and smart, the players’ morale is automatically boosted and we are hopeful that the team will bring back good results,” she said.

Tessam general secretay Willy Namaona, who received the uniform on Tessam’s behalf hailed Standard Bank for the donation.

“On behalf of Tessam, I wish to thank Standard Bank for this timely gesture. The team had been using an old uniform and this donation is a big motivation to the girls. We hope this will not be the last time for the bank to assist us,” said Namaona.

Malawi is sending athletes from seven disciplines to this year’s Cucsa Games scheduled for University of Zambia in Lusaka from August 17 to 23. The seven disciplines include: Netball, Volleyball (men), Basketball (men), Lawn tennis (men and women), Chess (Men and women), football and athletics.

Other organisations that have contributed in cash or kind towards Malawi’s participation include Sports Council, Nampak and Candlex Limited.

The Malawi delegation leaves on Friday by road and is expected back home on August 24.
