Year of the Hyena? Malawi 2014: Tenthani’s Muckracking

“Cheers to a new year and  another chance  for us to get it right” Oprah Winfrey

Our friends from the Orient have their own unique way of naming years. They have the Year of the Dragon, the Year of the Tiger…they even have the Year of the Rat, Rabbit and Snake and the good old Ox! The Horse and Sheep also do not miss out on the action! Wow!

President Mutharika and some of the flops in May 20 presidential polls

President Mutharika and some of the flops in May 20 presidential polls

I am not sure if we were Chinese how we could have named the Year of Our Lord 2014…the Year of the Goat, the Chicken?

But let me hazard a guess…2014 should have been the Year of the Hyena!

Yes, it is my considered view that that might have been the right animal for us to name 2014 after.

Why the ‘Year of the Hyena’? Look, while kalulu the hare is depicted as a clever animal in many of our folktales, the hyena in many a folklore the world over is depicted as symbolising anything that is bad and silly. In fact in the Mtwara Region of Tanzania, it is believed that a child born at night while a hyena is crying – some say laughing – will likely grow up to be a thief. The Muckraker does not believe that, of course!

In Middle Eastern literature and folklore, the hyena is a typical symbol of treachery and stupidity. You see now, Africa is not the only place that sees the hyena in descipicable terms.

I grew up knowing the hyena as a cowardly animal, feasting on rotten game left by other cleverer animals. In my village hyenas would hit a goat kraal here and there but, unlike the lion and the leopard, we were not cultured to fear the hyena.

Such is how lowly the hyena is viewed.

This view of the hyena, I must confess, is not evidence-based. Neither is it scientific. It is just how people over the years have believed the hyena to be. The truth may be different but, for the purposes of today’s discussion, let us see the hyena in that uncomplimentary light.

So how does the Year of Our Lord 2014 begin to be the ‘Year of the Hyena’?

Look, 2014 was an election year, the year Malawi was supposed to define its destiny. We had three – make it four if you are generous –political groupings that had a realistic chance to lead this journey.

First, the People’s Party got into power by an accident of fate. If Bingu wa Mutharika had not succumbed to a malfunctioning heart during those ‘three mad days in April’ Joyce Banda could not have become president in 2012. She could have waited for 2014 to prove her mettle.

In 2014, Peter Mutharika could have been the candidate to beat for he could have been the ruling party’s candidate. But if Bingu had lived that long the DPP could have been so damaged that Peter could have been mice-meat at the polls. We all know the precipice Bingu was taking the nation to.

So the elections could have been for Joyce Banda and Lazarus Chakwera of the MCP to lose. Atupele Muluzi’s ‘Agenda for Change’ could not have been felt that much because the strong southern vote could have been realistically split between the PP and the DPP.

But Bingu’s death ironically gifted the DPP a new lease of life. As an orphaned party, the DPP was guaranteed a sympathy vote. And ‘cashgate’ that unravelled on Joyce Banda’s watch did not help her case either.

Although Ama was not directly fingered in ‘cashgate’, the fact that the systematic plunder of government resources happened on her watch damaged her.

So the game was thrown wide open – Joyce Banda versus Peter Mutharika versus Lazarus Chakwera.

While Banda and Mutharika could not escape the political sins of the past 20 years, Chakwera was a fresh-faced guy, straight from the pulpit complete with grace and righteousness.

But politics is not about grace and righteousness. Strength in numbers is supreme in such close contests.

So Malawians were given a choice to choose among Ama, Peter and Abusa. Atupele was not a real factor if truth be told.

Ordinarily Chakwera was a safe choice because he was untainted with the grime of corruption of the 20 years of democracy. But then Malawians still go into the polling booths with tribes and regions of origin at the back of their mind.

And the MCP did a bad job about weaning itself as a party of the Centre. That did it in.

Ama, too, could not make the most of the incumbency factor. Aside ‘cashgate’, her gender in a paternalistic society where women must play second fiddle to men did not help her.

The fact that she shared the southern vote with her main challenger, Mutharika, and the eastern one with the young Muluzi, sealed her fate.

So the mathematics worked for Peter Mutharika, the reluctant candidate whose very abhorrent name was supposed to have worked against him in a normal society.

But Malawi has never been a normal society. Look, Bakili Muluzi defied the odds to win the 1994 elections despite being the least educated and most vilified of those he competed with. Some naughty chaps revived his long forgotten 1960s criminal case but, that notwithstanding, we proudly said, ‘wakuba yemweyo’.

Bingu, too, could never have been president if Malawians cared about candidates’ past. The economist-turned-politician messed up at Comesa in Lusaka and a report by Eminent Elders was there for all to see but we still voted for him just because Muluzi told us to do so.

And, again, the younger Mutharika should never have been anywhere near national power owing to his dismal performance when his brother nepotistically placed him in Education, Justice and Foreign Affairs. But just because our tribal/regional politics, he scraped through.

Coming back to the Year of the Hyena, the DPP should have been the least-favoured party if Malawi were a normal country. Here was a party that ran our development partners out of town because of the arrogance of its eccentric leader. Here was a party that made us sleep for hours on end outside service stations looking for that all-important liquid.

Here was a party that almost made Malawi a failed state on the highway to Mogadishu.

But, like the Israelites of old who cried ‘better the slavery of Egypt’ when things got tough on their way to the ‘Promised Land’, we returned the party that made our life hell back to power.

Like the hyena in many a folktale, the DPP took advantage of the PP ‘cashgate’ mess and the fact that the MCP failed to grow itself out of the Central Region.

But, like the hyena, the DPP is failing to stamp its authority on the country. Everything is falling apart and nobody seems to be in control. Like the hyena in my village, when the powers that be speak we are not sure whether they are laughing or crying.

Just look at the flip-flopping that has gone down in the past few months. We are like kids in a science lab in junior secondary school experimenting which colour water may turn to when mixed with which chemical.

I hope in 2015 the DPP will wake up and realise the hyena politics it has practised in the past seven months has made us all look stupid and dumb like the spotted animal. I hope the DPP will make 2015 the Year of the Hare, at least that is one clever animal whose antics we should strive to emulate as a nation.

Happy New Year!

  3. Chengolopiyo says:

Tenthani has hit the nail on the head. There is a general sense of confusion in Malawi now. We might consider outsourcing leaders from the West – at least that’s what Zambia has done! But never be deceived: those in power are not confused at all; they know what they are doing and what they want: make as much Chilembwe as possible before the door to the coffers slams shut. I can hear confused voices unsure of the name to acclaim out or blame: Ama, Abu, Muth, Mul – all the while checking whether they are doning the right colours. I know respectable ladies and gentlemen who have a collection of all the political colours in Malawi, just in case they might need one or the other some day. Let us drink to the health of dear confusion, hoping it will reach unbearable proportions; for only thus can we hope for renewal. Confusion, dear countrymen (and women), is the chief ferment of every new era in history.

  4. phunda says:

Only those who voted for MCP were normal indeed!! Of all the not normals the most ones are those in the Judiciary with their less normal judgements.

  7. Bogolofu says:

Nacgate and blatantly bribing the media with the office of the First Lady embroiled in dubious NAC funding; the total sum of all these blunders by the incumbent has left the nation reeling from unrecoverable fiscal sleaze. The entire nation is being held hostage by a dysfunctional leadership and corrupt political system. Donors are waiting for the day the nation will speak with one voice and clean the political landscape of rogue state actors! 2015 is a year to redefine our democratic values! This is what the nation deserves for putting up with a political system that is long on sleaze and short on substance.

Malawi is suffering not because of APM but cashgate which happened during PP govt. Do not mislead people. Donors were there but stopped when JB was ruling after capital hill saga. Cashgate did not happened during APM , Forensic audit was done by the British after Papers revealed about cashgate. Musasokerese anthu. Malawi is suffering because of PP, Lutepo, Mphwiyo were these people present during APM’s govt? Zamisala basi !

  10. PMK says:

By the way, isn’t it a legally accepted practice to be allowing the VP to speak to Malaianns on any issue when such a time unveils? I just don’t seem to undertand Peter’s language, or is it tongue!

  12. Dom says:

Malawi is suffering because of the DPP. The donors do not trust APM because of his brother and the the part APM played. To make matters worse APM seems to be burrying his head in the sand about 92billion while magnifying 20billion. If he was serious about tackling corruption for the sake of the Nation. He would sort thing 92b first. The problem with that is, deep down, he knows he was in that together with his brother.
The only solution for Malawi is for him to pave way for new people with no strings attached to them. People who will lead Malawi without surrounding themselves with recycled polititians. For things to stabilise, we still need aid. I do not see aid resuming with his Leadership. Anthu tikuvutika.

  14. peter says:

I wonder how people have turn out to be saints. Many DPP supporters are preaching about constructive criticism these days than the past 2 years. Thats how its felt when people criticise you when your running the affairs. Remember how you made Joyce look very stupid on everything that used to happen when she was in power. Its your time now, do the magic.

  15. Akulu, now i undersatan what some body said about you. Even your name in ou Village depitcs a silly looking shallow minded young man. It is always night mare to force this naughty boy even to go to bath. Chabwino nchiti kukhala fii ndi kukhala wa nkhope ngati fisiyo?
It is disheartening to see the article out of sheer jeolosy and grid!!! take time to hear waht others say about you and confide in a mirror and agree how creation has been unfair to you.

Who ever is paying you for this may the Almighty God send him the afflictions!!!! Amen!!!

  17. TIMVE says:

We know Tenthani is MCP and thought Chakwera would made it but sadly the odds were in favour of Peter and Ralph remains bitter. Coming from the pulpit does not make Chakwera clean. JZU retired because he forsaw that MCP will not make it because of their past record. DPP is a relevant party and compaigns on things that people are able to relate hence the win . whether one likes it or not the DPP is here to stay.

Lets find a way forward how we can prosper. Improve our socio-economic life. The world is changing, let us think of tomoro

  20. chefourpence says:

Ah! Metallic! Sorry I saw ur comment late! History is important you are right . Thats the more reason why I raised this point. Ralph’s analysis of the election results is based on History. That’s my point and I respect that. BUT, why is MCP’s history missing? Its not about DPP being in power. Ralphs argument is pple were not supposed to vote for DPP because of its murky past. That’s where I come in. No hard feelings for MCP but all I ask for is an objective and balanced analysis. Otherwise, I still maintain that this is SPIN and whatever I have said.

  21. dumbilo says:

i have never read anything constructive ideas with this palooka Tenthani. just simian grumblings and so- called journo BS. Anyone can be a journo coz cruticism is easy. have u noticed how poor and dumb journos are? its becoz thry r really dumb and stupid! they can never work in a job that requires innovative ideas and programs. i rest my case. look at this protoplasm called Tenthani- big mouth but no ideas!

Imagine why is it taking so long now to deal with the Cashgate and the many corruption cases that occured since the time of Atcheya,Bingu,JB todate?Who will seriously sort them out?And honestly why underfunding the ACB?…anthuwa mbeu yake ndi imodzimodzi…yayellow yomwe ija…kutolatola ndi kusololasolola.

    1. Alipo says:

Sorry bwana mauya, I think u r not in Malawi. Let me highlight to u that the ACB is one of the highly funded departments in the current budget. The sooner the DPP started pursuing cashgate cases the sooner the judiciary strikes started. Someone from opposition wants this cases not to end

  27. Banda says:

  31. Angozo says:

I think Raphael Tenthani is sick minded, here in Malawi we believe in God so each and every year is the year of our Lord the creator not of anything that was created by him. If Tenthani can call 2014 the year of hyna it is for him not all Malawians. He must mind his language to avoid the wrath of God. I think his days are numbered there is no one who can curse God and live happly. Tenthani you must withdraw your foolish statement immediately, if you want to play you must play with those politicians and not the earth.

Golingo, don’t play the dirty card of tribalism. One day the tribal card bloodshed to this country. If all this is because of mbuzi zakummwera, where does that leave you? As part of mbuzi zakumpoto or zapakati? If we have no bright ideas that can add to the pertinent issues that Raphael is raising, it is better to keep quiet! My gut feeling is that Raphael would have raised the same issues he has raised anyway, even if Joyce Banda or Rev Chakwera or even Atupele Muluzi were ruling Malawi in the style that Peter Mutharika is. Raphael, thank you for a well written article. You’ve got style! And I doubt if Golingo understands what I mean when I say you’ve got style.

  52. baba says:

DPP used strategy that all other parties foreseen. Peter never spent a penny in his compaign on handouts, he was always looking for votes in central region and nothern region because he knew he was covered in his home region. I was one of the people who rigged the elections but when one of my friend told me to visit everything with a sober mind i realised that I was wrong and when I visited my village in Mzimba where Goodall comes from I realised I was all wrong I was missing something that even most of politicians will not accept even some of you reading this.

  55. jacaranda says:

Calling malawians abnormal is a grave offence. Just because your preffered party lost miserably in elections is not a passport to call us abnormal.

  56. o says:

Ama did not directly finger herself into the cashgate? This is a total lie. Give us evidence that exonerates her from benefiting directly from cashgate. It is well known by even children in Malawi that joyisi banda failed to explain the source of maize/abakha/nkhunda/nkhuku/agalu etc she used during campaign period, she has also failed to give an account of the jet sale proceeds, she defended Lutepo and Mphwiyo on cashgate involvement yet the nation knows that these are cashgaters and Lutepo has confessed and asked Malawians to forgive him. Lutepo, a PP top official, bought joyisi vehicles using cashgated money. Lutepo, cashgate suspect who has accepted doing the malpractice even before the court find him guilt, says that his account was just used by the big cashgater, joyisi.

Tenthani you are right about the voting according to regions in Malawi. But another reason why people, particularly in the south, did not vote for joyisi is that in addition to nepotism/regionalism in her appointments, she openly castigated the southerners at the podiums in her rallies yet she expected them to vote for her. What an irony! Another reason which was shared by both the center and the south was that she showed in black and white that her govt was a tumbuka by the tumbuka for the tumbuka. So it was naïve for her to expect people from the center and south to vote for her. This is why from the state house in LL she went straight to Nkhata-Bay and got settled there. Tumbukas know this fact pretty well that they were on the driving seat of this country in these past two years. That’s why no matter what may, they will always defend joyisi be it in court or on this forum. They know what they are fighting for. They are fighting for their own bellies and not for Malawians.

I also agree with you Tenthani that Atupele was out of the equation in the past general elections. joyisis and her PP were also out of the equation. I mean if truth can be told it was obvious on the ground that joyisi could not defeat Chakwera or Peter. In short, the game was between Chakwera and Peter. And the difference between the two was only the strategy. Knowing that their strong contender was MCP, DPP defeated MCP by eating it in their own backyard. That’s by taking all votes in Ntcheu and some parts of Lilongwe, Dowa, Nkotakota, and Salima and then shared almost equal parts in the north, the region where MCP thought could beat DPP.

But the interesting thing today is that our friends from the north have made people from the south to be more united than ever before. By selfishly bringing in the issue of federalism, all politicians from the south (except joyisi as she is not from the south) have joined hands with DPP to fight against selfishness of our friends from the north. It is evident today that if we go to the polls tomorrow, there will never be divided vote in the south. And if things remain like that until 2019, crying babies will cry again. I know truth pains but it has to be said anyway.

Malawi is for all Malawians, our failure as a nation is not just because of the president rathrr, our lack of collective patriotism. People loke Tenthani can positively help the majority to change their mindsets about our falling nation but he has choosen to condemn and destroy further. It is said that the worst people are not those who have done worst things like Hitler, rather, those who do nothing to correct the wrong. Malawi is full of intellectuals and skilled people capable enough of collectively transforming out nation if it were not for greed and pull down syndrome. Mt Tenthani, Malawi is my nation and so is yours, use your skill for positive change and not just for self glorification.

  69. Well articulated Ralph, even me I don’t understand Malawians if there was a party that was suppose to be the last to be considered to run the government it is DPP but eish Malawi made a very big mistake and its time to and Malawians will pay a heavy price. Malawi will learn the hard way khulupililani.

Malawi is a country full of people without direction or in short, whose minds are upside-down. Malawians are people that poverty, suffering, illiteracy, lack of information has for many years corrupted their minds and the way they look at things. Malawians are people who have many ways of creating problems but not even a clue to solve one, they are people who are very good in defending themselves in their stupid decisions, actions and choices they make and don’t know whether they are coming or going.

The only article by Tenthani written with sober mind.

  74. chefourpence says:

Tenthani’s argument seems to bank on history. DPP would not have won if…. I wonder why he doesn’t say the same of MCP given its history of terror…. Anyway, what we have here is spin! Filling a column by saying nothing so long as you are Ralph Tenthani! Or is it PP inspired propaganda?

    1. Metallic says:

While we are all hyenas as a republic, DPP as a party is composed of better hyenas than the rest…and that is why they as better hyenas won or if you like, steal the elections…kkkkkkkkk. I tell you DPP is full of strategies…they will keep on ruling here.

    Is Muck only in politics?

Policemen and women were killed supposedly by the husband of a very high ranking police woman, is there no “Muck to rack” there?

people have died in Salima due to ignorance, on just Two years old, can’t you write about that.

I though journalism was about information, new information, it appears I was wrong, it is all about, reminding people about what has no relevance to their lives, but to the journalists pocket.

When a journalist is broke all they do is get a pen and put down something that will excite some blood thirsty piranhas into action.

Malawi is and will be for a long time a very sad country where people will kill, incite, and do the undoable for money.
