No Malawi nomination at the 59th Grammys
The news might not be as big as it was last year when Malawi Prison Band was nominated for Best World Album at the 58th Grammy awards.
Courtesy of Grammy-winning producer, Ian Brennan and his wife, Italian photographer and filmmaker, Marilena Delli, Malawi got a Grammy nomination for the first time in music history.
Contrary to last year, this year saw no Malawi artist being nominated following the 59th Grammy Awards nominations were announced live on CBS a few day ago.
Brennan, the man behind the project, traveled to Malawi and Mozambique specifically to document and record the music of prisoners at the maximum security prison in Zomba.
The US producer was granted access to launch the project after agreeing to the prison head’s request to offer violence prevention classes to both inmates and guards. He then secured the permission of the prisoners, and began recording outdoors and next to the metal and woodworking shops.
Despite Malawi Prison Band losing the award to Angelique Kidjo at the gala ceremony in Los Angeles, Malawi still celebrated the phenomenon.
The 59th Grammys, slated for February 12, 2017 has seen Beyonce walking away with 9 nominations, followed by similarly huge stars Drake, Rihanna and Kanye getting 8 nominations each.
