15 Lilongwe University of Agriculture students arrested for shoplifting Malawi Gin bottle
Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody 15 students from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) for theft and another charge of conduct likely to cause breach of peace on Saturday at NICO Center Metro shop in Lilongwe old town.
Confirming the incidence, Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Kingsley Dandaula said the students had a stopover at Metro NICO Center to buy some assorted items but in the process one student was seen stealing a bottle of Malawi Gin and walked out without paying for it.
“The student took a big bottle of Malawi Gin and hid it in his armpit and walked out with the bottle without paying for it, not knowing that a shop supervisor was watching him.
“As soon as he walked out the supervisor called him back and asked him about the hidden Malawi Gin bottle, this angered the rest of the students and a big fracas started,” said Dandaula.
The Publicist said the students then started to damage the shops main doors, and at the same time others were stealing various assorted items including chocolates, Kapenta fish packs and others items.
“The supervisor called the Police and arrested the students which included some college girls and boys, meanwhile the students are in Police custody pending to appear in court,” said the Publicist.
Dandaula said the students were expected to answer charges of conduct likely to cause breach of peace contrary to section 181 of the penal code and general theft contrary to section 271 of the penal code.

It is sad, the only time University students behave is when they are looking for employment.
