According to eye witnesses the Minibus, a Toyota Hiace registration Number BM 7835, was heading to Lilongwe when the driver of the vehicle Jonasi Somanje tried to overtake a truck and in the process lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.

Meanwhile all the 16 people have been referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) from Mchinji District Hospital.

Hospital sources at Mchinji said the district has no x-ray machine and it was difficult to treat the patients because most of them have fractures, and only managed to do minor treatment on them.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Chimwemwe Banda told MANA that the Hospital has referred all the 16 patients to KCH on three ambulances and two other vehicles.

Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer Moses Kajawa Nyirenda confirmed the accident and said investigations by the Police show the driver of the minibus was overspeeding and after losing control of the vehicle he hit several trees hence injuring all the passengers.

Added Nyirenda: “Contrary to information spreading around no one has died but all 16 people sustained serious injuries including the driver.”

Overspeeding is the order of the day for most minibuses and it is also the weaknesses of passengers not to warn the driver amicably, I remember one time I was travelling Lilongwe to Dedza When I asked the driver to reduce speed one of the passengers shouted at me “Leave the driver alone he started driving some yrs ago and he has vast experience” but to my surprise when we reached Nkhoma turn off they were traffic patrol officers from A/30 and he handed the keys to the conductor
