3 immigration officers arrested in Chitipa for stealing $420 from DRC refugees
Malawi Police in Chitipa have arrested three senior immigrations officers based in the area for stealing 420 USA dollars from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) refugees.
Confirming the arrest to Nyasa Times, Chitipa police public relations officer sergeant Gradwell Simwaka identified the three as Jolly Kasanga 24 years old from Kasisi village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mwaulambia, Bruce Thunga 34 years of TA Mayaka in Zomba and Kenneth Lajabu 34 of TA chikumbu in Mulanje district.
According to Simwaka, the suspects deceived the DRC refugees that they will safely keep their money as government officials.
“We have indeed arrested the three immigration officers for stealing 420 USA dollars from the DRC refugees,” said Simwaka.
The Chitipa police spokesman identified the names of the concerned DRC victims as Kaboy Edmond and Luis Limenzi.
He said Thunga and Lajabu corrected 200 USA dollars from Edmond plus K40, 000 while Kasanga got 220 USA dollars from Limenzi plus K3,000.
“The victims reported the matter to the police and then we arrested them,” he disclosed.
Meanwhile, the suspects are expected to appear before the court soon to answer theft charges.
