30 Pakistanis arrested for illegal entry in Malawi

Malawi Police arrested 30 Pakistan nationals for entering Malawi illegally, official news agency Mana reported on Thursday.

The report saifd Police are also keeping in custody three Malawians for aiding and abetting the illegal immigrants.

Kaitano Lubrino,  spokeman for Nkhotakota Police Station said around 11:00 pm on May 5,  a 15-tonner truck registration number KA 5750 belonging to Medina Rice Milling and Marketing Centre stopped at Kaombe Roadblock in the district for usual search.

“After the driver who is identified as Jabesi Chidothi (34) of George Village, T/A Kwataine in Ntcheu was instructed to open the van, the police discovered that he was trafficking illegal immigrants into Malawi.

“This development prompted the police to arrest all the occupants in the truck including the three Malawians who were leading the foreigners to their intended destination,” he sai as quoted by Mana.

The other two are Willard Kaunda of Nasawa Village, T/A Chikowi in Zomba and Thokozani Chingwalu of Masasa Village in area of T/A Makwangwala in Ntcheu who are all answering the charge of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants.

Lubrino said the illegal immigrants have revealed that they are seeking asylum and that they used unchartered routes to gain entry into Malawi through Lake Malawi.

Government authorities have repeatedly pleaded with Malawians not to aid illegal immigrants into the country, saying the continued influx of illegal immigrants poses a threat to the country’s economy, security and even jobs.
