32 arrested in Blantyre: Malawi Police sweeping exercise

Malawi Police in Blantyre on Tuesday arrested 32 people during a sweeping exercise conducted in Ndirande Township, Wenela bus depot and within the Blantyre city center.

Police assistant Public Relations Officer, Andrew Mayawo told Nyasa Times that the sweeping exercise was staged in reaction to a series of crimes that have occurred recently within Blantyre.

The law-enforcers arrested James Mushonga Phiri aged 27 for the offence of theft; Vincent Kalembo 23, together with Blessings Floater aged 21 and Ellen Mbanga 43 years old for being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa (locally known as Chamba).

While the other 27 people were charged with offences of selling liquor without licence, touring, and rogue and vagabond.

“The police is urging all people within the Blantyre jurisdiction to avoid breaking the law for we will never stop making arrests,” warned Mayawo.

That’s good, but your arrests are biased. You spare those that give you money and those that sell you liquor on credit. If they happen to deny you credit, they become your enemies. Even other police officers have their pubs there, we know them very well, but I dont want to mention their names I was there on Tuesday the 9th August 2016 and did my simple research. I found that all liquor sellers behind Blantyre Flea Market do not have operating licenses. Instead of arresting people for Chamba, maybe focus your efforts on the BIG crimes like cashgate in which millions are stolen.
