7 people arrested for unlawful land use in Blantyre

Malawi Police have arrested seven people for unlawful use of land reserved for forestry purpose in Ndirande Township, Blantyre.

The suspects are 28 year-old Misheck Chibowa, Amidu Patel, 53, Austin Mwantenga 62, 32 year-old Fred Banda, 35 year-old Owen Mankhaule, 32 year-old Paulo Levison 32, and 35 year-old Mtima Njolomole.

Last year, according to Blantyre Police deputy spokesperson, Sergeant Andrew Mawayo, the suspects were advised to vacate the land and that they were duly compasated.

“Bu this year they chose to return to the land where they were found by Mr. Feton Chitseko, Plantations Manager for Ndirande Forest Reserve during patrols and they apprehended them and later taken to Nirande Police,” said Mayawo.

The charge levelled against them is unauthorised use of land and premises contrary to Section 316 of the Penal Code.

You don’t arrest people for encroaching the land. You just chase evict them!
