Goodall, Kumpalume collide over x-ray machines: Malawi ministers in collision course

Finance minister Goodall Gondwe says the government has paid off SAR9 million for the repair of an x-ray machine at Kamuzu Central Hospital and it should be fixed anytime.

However, minister of health Peter Kumpalume says his ministry is yet to receive the money, putting the two senior ministers on a simple collision course for a serious issue of national importance.

“Treasury released the money, I think last week. It was nine million rand so to me that issue is over,” Gondwe said in an interview.

When told Kumpalume says his ministry is waiting for the money, the ministry has not received it, Gondwe said as far as he was concerned, treasury released the money and the ministry of Health sent the money to the suppliers in South Africa.

“If the minister of Health says he has not received the money, then go back to him, maybe he knows where the money is,” said Gondwe.

The x-ray machine has broken down for a year now and the government is failing to fix the problem, another example of fast collapsing health sector as the economy has taken a slump pushing the government into bankruptcy.

According to officials at Kamuzu Central Hospital, the machine serves 100 patients a day and about 2500 a month. Patients are now sent to private hospitals for x ray services or cram at Bwaila Hospital for the service.

  1. It is very unfortunate that two senior ministers could be shifting blames to each other playing with peoples lives in the press like this.

Where is patriotic leadership in Malawi? They are all telling lies every day.

  2. FACT: Government bout 3 brand new Digital X-ray machines to be installed in 3 central hospitals (KCH included). The machines are ready to be transported from South Africa but the engineers gave a condition after visiting the sites: X-Ray Labs/Rooms to install the new equipment need to be renovated according to their specifications (specs/plans were given). As far as I know, the rooms are not ready yet, thereby delaying the installation of the machines. Same as the CT Scanner for QUEENS….it has been in storage since 2012 waiting for the construction of a proper CT room. Same story at Mzuzu Central Hospital…the Chines gvt donated a CT to be installed at MCH but the govt is failing to finalize the construction of a mere ROOM!! Same story with Digital Mammography Machines (for breast cancer screening)….The machines stayed in storage for more than 2 years!! Why? You guessed right….govt delayed construction/renovation of the labs!! NO Political will at all!

  3. akalamba achitsiru awa pamodzi ndi nkhalamba inzawo mumati ndi president ija onse atule pansi maudindo adzikalera zidzukulu.

  4. Goodall is lying trying to get wina wake kuti chimuphulikile …lots of times we have heard kuti money has been released koma zabodza.

By the way what currency is SAR….(South African Rand?) I thought it has always been ZAR?

  5. Goodall is simply lying……No money has been sent to Ministry of Health or remitted to South Africa…He should be ashamed that he is doing that while risking lives of Malawians….

  6. Anybody ready to revolt please let me know. I have the resources and I’m well connected. I just need resources on the ground so we can network.

  7. could it be that our very intelligent and professional reporter has got the figure wrong? i don’t see an x-ray machine repair costing 9 million rand, olo 9 million kwacha singakwane, olo half million kwacha sizingatheke kupanga ma repairs. i hate fake journos. mij again

  8. Total disconnect and you expect donors to provide budgetary support ???? You can’t be serious, this is unbeliavable. This is so embarrassing to be a Malawian. The President is in hibernation for ten days so he probably has no clue ths is happening…………REVOLT!,,,,,

  9. First of all 9mn rand, why not buy a new machine? Is this govt being cheated in daylight by the do called suppliers from Jubek? Or is this govt cash gating again?

To me Goodall seem to be telling the truth. Look closely who will really like to cashgate the money? The one who has friends that are more likely to cashgate. The minister of health.

You are playing with people’s lives.

  10. The problem is that the kwacha has devalued by 100% and the budgets for hospitals are in Kwachas, and on top funding is not as per budget approved. This is a recipe for failed state. our economy has completely collapsed, when economy and currency collapses everything else follows like the health sector, roads are in bad shape, inflation is our of control. We need change

  11. Who is saying the truth then or who is lying? I think both of them are… Pathetic politicians called Ministers…

  12. so, over 100 patients requiring x-rays at KCH have to be turned away every day!!! gracious Lord have mercy on us!
this kind of negligence has never happened before; not even under Bakili Muluzi.
A president, tamapangani ma periodic reshuffles a cabinet yanu, for goodness sake. see now, your ministers are sleeping on their jobs!!!! and, under our circumstances, your minister of health must always be a qualified doctor and not a “mere” scientist.

Who is telling the truth here? Of course one of them is! But which one, exactly? Lets explore together!
    Fact number 1:
“Only three types of people tell the truth: kids, the drunk and the angry.” – Elizabeth Reyes

Who then is the kid or the drunk or the angry between Good-All and Kampalume? Obviously Good-All is not a kid to Kampalume and Good-All is not angry that he is not releasing money to the Ministry of Health for the repair. But Kampalume is angry because he would be rated a failure as a minister of health if the repair is not done.
    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
    Fact number 2:
“It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place.” – H.L. Mencken

But what will Kampalume gain by claiming that he has not received the money? Not something we know! Simply put; nothing!
What will Good-All Gondwe gain by claiming that Treasury released the money? A lot! He will save his face, APM’s and the government’s; by obliviating bankrupty claims.

I hope we now have an idea of who is lying and who is not.

  14. While people are dying like flies in this country, these fools are busy squabbling like children on a playground. This plain amateurish and stupid. Goodall and Kumpalume, we cant afford these cat and mouse games over such a very important issue. Lives are at stake. Peter must resign…he must go and we must have a fresh election…
