Student ‘killed’ villager: Malawi catholic university in Mangochi DMI-St. John closed
DMI-St. John the Baptist University, a catholic university runs by the Sisters of Daughters of Mary Immaculate, Mangochi Campus, had been besieged by irate villagers on Sunday. Police and Malawi Defence Force soldiers failed to contain the people and advised the institution to close.

The villagers set the institution on fire , allegedly after a student killed a villager.
“Police and soldiers have barricaded the school and we are not allowed out of the premises,” reports one of the students.
Investigations reveal two villagers have died due to DMI students.
“The first one is a man who died of BP after seeing his heavily pregnant wife being beaten for a laptop stolen from a student. His death was confirmed Saturday and his pregnant wife prematurely gave birth same day to baby twins.
“The second death has been confirmed today of a man who was beaten up by an angry mob after a school girl, whom he raped this very semester recognised him.”
He was admitted yesterday.
“Villagers want revenge. All the students who sleep out of campus slept in campus last night and they are dead worried about their assets out there.
“Right now police has surrounded our school as it is still not safe enough. The school has to close,” says the student.
Some students are already making evacuation plans with parents and relatives.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have announced that they have closed the college. A bus has been hired to evacuate the students out of the campus protected by police.
.St. John the Baptist University in Mangochi was established in 2010 under the supervision of the Catholic Development Commission of Malawi-education division.
The strict Catholic church school is in the lakeshore district of Mangochi.
