Two killed in bus accident, Mwamwonde die
Barely three days after a Malasha Bus killed two people in Dedza district due to over speeding two more people have died in Rumphi district in another bus accident.
The Super Sink bus overturned and crashed at a place called Manolo near Chishombe in the district also seriously injuring 24 passengers.
Rumphi Police Public Relations Officer Victor Khamisi told Nyasa Times that the accident occurred around 03:30am on Friday and the bus, registration number BR 2415, was travelling from Lilongwe to Karonga.
Khamisi said 13 of the seriously injured passengers were admitted to Rumphi District Hospital while the other 11 were referred to Karonga District Hospital.
“The bus was carrying 50 passengers on board and upon reaching Manolo the driver was over speeding as a result he failed to negotiate a corner. The bus overturned before falling on its right side and two people died on the spot while 24 were seriously injured,” he explained.
Khamisi said the driver only identified as Richard Kasalika was among the deceased while the other person’s particulars were yet to be established.
Mostly, Super Sink passengers are cross border traders who travel to Dar es Salaam and Kyela in Tanzania. The Super Sink buses normally depart Lilongwe for Karonga between 18:30 and 17:30hours.
And this is not the first time a Super Sink Bus has been involved in an accident between Mzuzu and Karonga.
Another Super Sink bus was destroyed by fire at Nkhamenya in Kasungu this year.
The Dedza accident that involved the Malasha Bus happened just after Dedza Police Road block also due to over speeding. Eight people were injured. The night bus was traveling from Mzuzu to Blantyre.
Shockingly, at the time of the two accidents both buses had 50 passengers, two people dying on the spot, one deceased person not being immediately identified, almost happening around the same time (around 3am) and also occurring in the same M1 Road.
Meanwhile, former parliamentarian, Green Lulilo Mwamonde, has confirmed that his son Green Mwamondwe Jnr who used to work at First Merchant Bank Shoprite branch in Blantyre has died in a bus accident after Chiweta.
Two weeks ago, a collision at Nsipe in Ntcheu involving two executive coaches of AXA and National Bus and a small family car left two people seriously injured along the same M1 Road.
