ZZZzzzzzz… Bored MPs fall asleep listening to Malawi President Mutharika
Follow, follow, follow the leader of the House, George Chaponda into dozing. That was the case of Friday at Parliament as a number of law makers were seen sleeping, yawning, checking their watches and looking bored in general while President Peter Mutharika was delivering a State of National Address at Parliament Building in Lilongwe.

While others in the audience were awake, many appeared unengaged and antsy during Mutharika’s speech.
Leader of the House, Chaponda, who is a member for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led by example in dozing and snoring together withMalawi Congress Party (MCP) legislators Joseph Njobvuyalema and Alex Major.
Zodiak TV which covered the state opening of parliament live, capture Chaponda and others on camera “fast asleep.”
Several other lawmakers were also looking sleepy a development which has angered most Malawians who have condemned the behaviour through various social outlets.
According to most of the commentators, the tendency is not good for the development of the nation as the MPs pocket allowances for nothing provided by Malawians through taxes.
The house is expected to meet for a number of weeks in which members will be deliberating on the 2016-17 national budget to be presented by the Finance minister Goodall Gondwe next week Friday.
They will start their deliberations in commenting and responding to the speech Mutharika presented during the opening ceremony.
In his speech, Mutharika outlined the developments his government has done in the gust ended fiscal year as well as reflecting on what the government intends tp do in the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
