Appointment of Commissioners for Malawi pollsters in two weeks – State House
Presidential Press secretary Mgeme Kalirani says the Head of State would announce names of new commissioners at pollster, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in two weeks.
Kalirani said all political parties have sent the names to the President as required by law and the the Head of State along with other state security agencies, including the National Intelligence Bureau are scrutinising the names.
“The process starts in parliament…the President is now scrutinising the names but there might be a delay as the names will have to be vetted by state security agencies as well,” he said.
He therefore said in two weeks time, the government will make the announcement on the new names.
MEC commissioners’ office expired on May 17 whilst that of the chairman Maxon Mbendera expires in October.
The commissioners were blamed for the messy general election in 2014 that saw President Peter Mutharika win the presidential election by 36 per cent followed by Malawi Congress Party’s Lazarus Chakwera who amassed 27 per cent.
Mbendera said all the commissioners were available for reappointment.
