Malawi govt admits caught pants down on child trafficking to South Africa
Home Affairs minister Jappie Mhango has conceded the government was caught pants down, snoozing when South African authorities caught three child traffickers with 82 children aboard a cargo vehicle.
“As a ministry, we are dealing with this emerging problem, we never expected that the problem would be this huge,” he said on Tuesday.
Mhango said this was a complex matter because the human traffickers are usually very sophisticated.
“We are working with the ministry of Information to provide civic education to the people on this emerging problem,” he said.
Nyasa Times has information which indicate that the human traffickers and most of the children trafficked are from Mangochi.
Mangochi police spokesperson Rodrick Maida said said there is no complaint of a missing child in the district.
“Could be the trafficking is done in collaboration with the parents, we suspect that the traffickers pay the parents some money,” said Maida.
All the three suspected traffickers are in police custody in South Africa.

I am very not understanding the story, does government wear pants? But if the story is saying looks (zoona) then employing children as traffic police was not right unless if I don’t know what child trafficking is.
‘Sophisticated’??!! These poor children were in a lorry that would have had to pass through many roadblocks. How is that sophisticated? More likely, those at roadblocks were paid not to see anything.
Please ,try to get your facts correct. It was 57 in total ,18 girls and the rest were boys not rubbish written here.
interesting. we really need to be serous to enforce the TIP Act Mr. Minister. you have everything you need in your hands
Last week at Mchinji boarder at around 11pm, an SA reg mid-bus came to the boarder with over 20men and women from Mzimba. The immigration and police detained them for a 30minutes. They said they had arrested all of them and tried to force them to reveal their “trafficker”. Meanwhile their rep was outside discussing with a policeman and I overhead that each person should pay K10,000 to be free to leave Malawi and enter Zambia. 30minutes later the bus entered Zambia thru Mwami boarder. The government cannot be genuinely “caught pants down”. Immigration can confirm this at Mchinji/Mwami boarder.
Why is anyone with a sensible mind keeping you in this job? Mzuzu Albino woman attempted killing you were caught sleeping, 82 Children found in South Africa from Malawi, you again with your Police and Immigration chiefs were caught sleeping. When are you going to wake up. You deserve to be fired!
