Mwawi says Malawi Queens should hire expatriate coach
At a time when the nation is still waiting for Netball Association of Malawi to name the Queens Coach, the advice from the team’s evergreen shooter, Mwawi Kumwenda is that the country needs an expatriate coach.
Kumwenda, who is in the country on an off season holiday, said it is high time the nation employed a foreign netball coach to be deputized by a local mentor.
“I feel that if we are serious in upgrading the game in the country, we need a foreign coach from either Australia or New Zealand because these countries are far ahead from us,” said Kumwenda.
She cited an example of South Africa which has a foreign coach, insisting days of undermining netball is gone.
“That is just my suggestion because l know with issues of resources it could be a toll order but at the end of the day things can improve for the better in as far as netball is concerned in the country,” said the former Kukoma Diamonds netballer.
Commenting on the team’s preparations ahead of the Fast Five tournament, Kumwenda appealed to the corporate world to assist the Queens so that they can have an early camp.
“Our friends have already started preparations for the tournament and this is the right time to go into camp if we want to bring good results,” said Kumwenda.
She however, was optimistic of good results if their preparations will be smooth, insisting the team needs friendly matches before the tournament.
The Queens, who are ranked fifth in the World have skillful netballers in Mwawi Kumwenda, Sindi Simutowe, Towera Vinkhumbo, Beatrice Mpinganjira, Takondwa Lwanzi, Joana Kachilika, Caroline Ngwira and Bridget Kumwenda but most of the times they are let down due to lack of enough resources.
Currently, they bank their hopes on government and Airtel Malawi.
trouble with a local coach is that he/she is part of the same culture and seeing things through the same lens. you need an out-of-the-box thinking and problem-solving. All sports in the country face similar track record especially without proper target setting.
Resources will forever be a problem. But as in all manner, Malawian; everybody seems to be an expert even those that hardly know the sport or how its nurtured and managed elsewhere and with success!
Mwawi tangonena amene ukufuna adzakoche ku Malawi. Problem in netball is not a coach but lack of resources. Kapena mwina ukunena zoon paja the whole netball team comes from the north
Mwawi mwawi mwawi how many times did I call your name….zidya ntchito za manja ako…pano mpa Malawi dziko lo nunkha…azingosinthana omwe aja tinazolowera….tee expratriateyo adzampatsanji mwayiwe
I think Mwawi has no brains besides playing netball. Foreign coach for what? to do what? We have our own ladies experienced ones who have taken the team this far, what’s wrong with them? All what is needed is enough resources basi. Why do we look down upon ourselves and always think that what is foreign is the best. I am very disappointed because I ddn’t expect this to be coming from a person like Mwawi. Be proud of your own people my dear the likes of achina Mary Waya can deliver its only that they are not paid for… Read more »
