Kambuku granted bail — as it emerges he allegedly falsified vehicle mileage to secure personal car

Former National Water Resources Authority Chief Executive Officer Dwight Kambuku has been granted bail by the Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe, just a day after his dramatic arrest on allegations of abuse of office and uttering a false document.

Kambuku: Salary and vehicle allegations at heart of case

The court ordered Kambuku to pay a K1 million cash bail bond, provide one surety bonded at K2.5 million on a non-cash basis, and report to Area 30 Police Headquarters every fortnight on Mondays.

His lawyer, Chrispine Ndalama, confirmed the development, bringing a swift resolution to what has already become a high-profile case within Malawi’s public sector.

Kambuku was arrested by Fiscal Police just a day earlier over a string of serious allegations relating to his conduct while at the helm of the Authority.

It is alleged that Kambuku had been drawing a salary significantly above the institution’s officially approved salary structure, raising questions over how such an arrangement was permitted to continue undetected.

He is further suspected of unlawfully acquiring a personal vehicle by allegedly falsifying its mileage records while still serving at the Authority — an allegation that, if proven, would point to a deliberate attempt to manipulate official records for personal gain.

With Kambuku now released on bail, attention turns to the ongoing investigation into both allegations, as authorities continue building their case ahead of any formal court proceedings.
