Blantyre Water Board to use pre paid meters in kiosks
Blantyre Water Board (BWB) says it has plans to introduce prepaid meters in kiosks in order to reduce loss of revenue which happens between BWB and water users.
The revelation was made during an interface meeting which was organised by Genesis Manja Othandiza (GEMO) a community based organization which empowers local communities to monitor service delivery at ward level.
Making the revelation BWB kiosk manager, Francis Baluwa said the board wants to introduce the prepaid meter system in kiosks in order to reduce problems which Water User Associations (WUAs) were having when paying their bills.
“This system is helpful because it will allow water users associations to pay their bills in advance thereby reducing the loss that happens to BWB when WUAs fail to pay their bills,” he said.
“Currently they are installing these meters in houses and in some areas and shortly they will be available for kiosks,” he added.
Baluwa said the plan will be implemented very soon, as what remains is to source funds for the project.
“The plans are there but what you can know is that prepaid meters are more expensive than post paid meters so as soon as BWB gets the funds we are going to roll out the project,” he said.
Speaking at the meeting GEMO managing director, Fatima Mauluka commended BWB for its determination in improving service delivery to its customers.
“I must commend BWB for having this plan because this will save WUAs from having long outstanding bills with BWB,” she said.
Mauluka said the opening of Kudya BWB service centre is another manifestation that BWB listens to its customer’s grievances.
“I want to thank BWB for taking seriously the grievances of people from Naotcha and Green corner wards as now people no longer walk long distances to pay and enquire about bills,” she said adding that people from Chilobwe will not be traveling to Blantyre to pay water bills.
