150 DPP members defect to AFORD over Wa Jeffrey ‘insulting’ remarks

Over 150 members of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Karonga, led by deputy director for the youths in Karonga North West constituency Petros Mtonga, on Wednesday defected to Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) over what they call “insulting remarks” against them by Jeffrey wa Jeffrey – DPP’s secretary general.

Aford members led by Mrs Tadala Chihana

Controversial Jeffrey wa Jeffrey said during a political rally she held in the district recently that North Malawi should forget of producing a president for the country.

Speaking during a press briefing announcing defection Wednesday, Mtonga said they believe joining AFORD will make the party mighty again, and will help in making sure that people of the region are not looked down on.

“We were die-hard [members] of the DPP but Jeffrey wa Jeffrey’s remarks are beyond our control,” said Mtonga.

He added: “We’ve been inspired, among others, also by [Frank] Mwenifumbo who was also a senior member of the DPP but has now joined AFORD to help not only North Malawi but the whole country become great again.”

Over 3 000 PP members join AFORD

At the same presser, deputy regional governor for the northern region in the People’s Party (PP), Bentry Winga, also announced that he and 3 000 other PP members has also joined AFORD.

Winga said the defection was because of the party’s “weakness” in the region.

In his remarks, DPP deputy regional governor for the northern region Smart Kayira admitted the developments were recipe for disaster for the ruling party.

“If the SG [Jeffrey wa Jeffrey] will not apologise for this, DPP should expect the worst from the north,” Kayira told Nyasa Times in a telephone interview.

In his remarks, Frank Mwenifumbo – legislator for Karonga Central who also joined AFORD at an event in Lilongwe recently – said he was “happy” with the developments.

“I’m here in Lilongwe, but I’m happy to hear that communities back home are behind me,” he said.

  1. Reading the comments here shows that the level of tribalism in this country is alarming. Dangerous talk like this will lead to tribal wars. It starts from the leaders themselves, the fact that our own president is so tribalistic, won’t even consider a person from the north as his vice president. I am from the south and i have stayed in other African countries but it is here in Malawi that i get shocked when we treat our fellow Malawians like this. Jeffrey is an ignorant fool and her careless remarks have caused her party a lot of damage. Some morons here may say that 150 will not make any difference but they forget that every single vote counts. The fact that you don’t look into the future will be your own undoing, this is only the beginning and with a massive defection like that what will happen between now and the next elections? A wise man counts his losses not his gains.

  2. Kodi a DPP matukutuku amenewa kuyamba kusankhana mitundu mulimba? Kodi nde kuti siili mu Malawi kodi anthu aku mpoto mumawaopa chani? Kodi aMalawi ndinunso osiyana? Kodi mukayamba nanga a pakati nawonso akayamba zawo chifukwa ndidzachidziwikire sikuti nawonso amasapota chipani chanu. 3. MR.SATANA,I write what I believe and cherish contrary, you write what you do not comprehend. What I understand from your narration is that I was not correct what I wrote about 150 people who defected from your Destructive Peoples Party.Let me be clear,I did not mention MPs,I mentioned people in general so please do not put words into my mouth which I did not write.Another thing to correct you is that NYASATIME media is not biased as you have written in your rebuttal. The Media is doing just fine in African standard. What you want is for the media to write what your misguided DPP wants?.Another thing is that I do not impose myself on leaders,I follow what I believe is satisfactory to me and that’s why I supported Chipembere and his brilliant and patriotic colleagues.I will never support someone just because we come from the same Province,Iam not unlettered like you sir.To me I regard every Malawian as the owner of the land period. The country is not owned by the majority alone if you will. The Northerners have the rights to be elected leaders if they have brilliant resume.Chihana and his coleagues were welcomed by the masses of our country because it was their patriotic duty. Now,the type of tribalism you have introduced in our country is both savagery and monstrous. You look fools in that every time, you attack the Northerners whether they have done something wrong or not. This is why our country is lagging behind many countries in Africa,Look at our brothers and sisters in Tanzania for instance,Nyerere came from the Zanaki minority in the North and ruled Tanzania not by the barrel of an AK Rifle, but, because he ruled with passion and care for 38 years. The hatrade some Malawians from the Central and South, are showing against the Northerners is both despicable and lunacy. What Malawians need is decent leadership and not the type of Bingu and his brother, who have destroyed our nation and to be fair, these two spoilers have not contributed to the freedom struggle of our country, but they just came from nowhere to loot our resources and created havoc among ourselves.Mr.Satana,think before you write bunkum. LONG LIVE BE LOVED MOTHER MALAWI!!!!!!!!

  5. Mr Winston Msowoya, it is a pity that you don’t know what you are commenting at. In the first place we don’t have evidence about the number 150 which is said to have defected to Afford. Secondly ,150 will not change any political muscle for AFFORD , a party which dying slowly.Thirdly there is nothing bad Jeffrey’s speech unless you tell Malawians any party from the north which can contest and win the elections. Is it not surprising you Msowoya that Afford a party from the north has less MPs compared to DPP which has its base in the south? You are talking of the unknown 150 people while the DPP MP won by thousands in the district. Why is AFFORD not having support from fellow northerners there except defectors which are not even known except the number 150? What wisdom is in Mwenefumbo that he can join a party which he knows will never produce any president in Malawi and has the least number of MPs winning because of the name of the father not because he can do anything. Even Mwenefumbo’s constituents are in a disarray failing to understand the MP’s move. I wonder why Msowoya can bubble along with the unknown 150 yet the north has got thousands of supporters belonging to DPP. And it is obvious that in the 2019 elections DPP will have more supporters than that of Mwenefumbo’s AFFORD. My advice to Winston is that you should one day come to your country and see things on the ground for yourself other than just taking things from NYASA and other biased media. Spare atleast a week here GOING ON THE GROUND AND GO BACK to where you are with a real picture that no northerner can win presidential race in Malawi.

  6. ONCE UPON A TIME CHIHANA, THE PRONENT OF AFORD BROUGHT A SENSE OF HOPE UPON MALAWIANS. HE POISED AS A LIBERATOR. INDEED MALAWIANS GAVE HIM THE SUPPORT HE DESERVED. HE SWEPT OUT ALL PARLIAMENTORY SEATS IN THE NORTH. NOT ONLY THAT BUT ALSO IN PART OF KASUNGU AND NKHOTAKOTA AT THA CENTRE BUT HE FAILED TO WIN THE PRESIDENCY SADLY. SO HE STARTED MESSIN UP HIS POLITICAL CAREER BY PARTNERIN WITH PARTIES WHICH HIS SUPPORTERS DID NOT LIKE AND THEREFORE MASS EXODUS, BY THE TIME HE DIED, THE PARTY HAD ONLY TWO SEATS. SINCE THEN IT STRUGGLES, THIS TIME IT HAS ONLY ONE SEAT. 156 DPP DEFECTORS TO AFORD I WOULD CALL IT A DROP IN THE SEA. PLZ DO MORE IF YOU WANT CLAIM YOUR LOST GLORY BY JOINING THOSE IN POWER FOR THERE ARE NO PERMANENT POLITICAL ENEMIES,PERIOD,

  10. The momentum gained by AFORD using DPPs own blunders,is an indication that the people of Malawi are not ready to be used by tribalistically motivated DPP hence, the national progressive reactions from Songwe to Nsanje and Chidzumulu to Chipata. The ractions send messeges of good hope and of a united Malawians of all affiliations. The hitherto DPP SG and her bedfellows, want to divide our nation for their own interests, but the people have openly spoken, this is a wakeup call to the tribalistically and regionalistically leaders like Peter Muthalika who himself has an American citizenship,of course,he has nothing to loose for he has fat bank account in the US,this was revealed by himself. The people of Malawi after bloody 32 years of Banda’s rule, are refusing to be dragged again into political melee which had caused a lot of sufferings.Of course, the response from our people to DPP,s SG divisive rhetorics, indicate that the people are united and love one another and no single deranged or a group of people will ever swallow divisive and dangerous political machinations for the interests of a few confussionists.Pray for other things, but do not pray for tribally motivated conflict.i have seen this in Rwanda when I went there as a freelance Journalist to cover the aftermath of a civil war between the Tutsis and Hutus in 1994.Malawians,let’s pray to God that the provocateurs do not succeed in diving us tribalistically. When in the country,I could see the propensity of the people around me and asked my host to take me to a mausoleum of the dead people,as soon as I entered in, my brain was totally confused to see a line of SKULLS hanging along the line and I could not believe that these people are one and speak the same language.Up to today,I still feel hallucination. So Malawians, let us not be induced by so-called leaders to hate each other,we are one whether you are a Tumbuka,Lomwe,Chewa, Sena Yao,Ngoni so on and so forth.Let us expose the leaders imbued with tribalistic hatrade otherwise,Malawi will be catapulted into a sinkhole of inferno.UNITY IS STRENTH AND DIVIDED,WE FALL!!!!!!!

  14. The DPP SG’s remarks are not only heartbreaking to many of us but they reminds us of the worst tribalisim DPP was built on hence leaving the party becomes the only remedy to no sense remarks like the ones from Jef wa jef

  15. DPP should act otherwise it may lose more members even the trust the likes of Goodall Gondwe and Obama chiumia had for the party.. Chakufwa Chihana sacrifice for the love of the country not only North and Democracy imene wakumpotoyu pamodzi ndi ma bishop anavutikirapo, ena akudyerera ayamba kunyozera mitundu INA. Mulungu amafuna kuti AFORD ilamulire palibe angaletse. Am sympathising with AFORD, who are capable of leading Malawi but denied the chance because of tribalistic minds. Let me take a humble by declaring that I will vote for the party here in Monkeybay.

  16. Congratulations Level Headed people from the Northern Region for ditching DPP.. While I commend you for making such a bold decision, I think you have missed out somehow.

Are you sure you will get anywhere with Afford? My suggestion is that you should now start weighing options. I feel that a strong MCP, propped up by many people in the North joining it, will give the thieving DPP led government a run for its money.

The other option is of course an MCP/ Afford alliance to boot out DPP. I know many will say this has been tried before but we should realize we’ve come a long way and have learned so many things such that a workable well negotiated combined greed free force is possible.

Let us all give this some serious thought. Remember, on its own,MCP or Afford may not achieve the desired goal.

  17. I can stand on the hill and rise up my volume kuti na kumpoto nkhomo la DPP lasekedwa,, I can tell you kuti pompano mva Harry Mkandawire ndi gulu lake akubwera from Mzimba together with Honorable Makwenda Chunga!!

  18. Malawi needs a very strong Aford to keep government in check and to benefit this country! Let’s us support their revamp and give them support! These former and ruling parties are simply money collecting agents for Asians! Aford please we need you! You brought the party! You had key executives in thyolo, mulanje, Phalombe, ZOMBA! This party seems serious!

  19. The only person which the northerners banked on to win the elections was Joyce Banda. Even if all the northerners from all the parties in Malawi defect to AFFORD the north will never produce a candidate. Why don’t these people accept the truth? The truth indeed pains. Please just give one name from the north who can stand as candidate for the whole region. Kamlepo?Chihana? Dan Msowoya? Who else then?

  20. Zikuwoneka kuti AFORD yayaka moto Ku Mpoto nanga pakana anthu kuululuka chipani cholamula!!! Kkkkkkkk tiziona chaka chake nchino

  21. Or mutachoka koma chilungamo ndi chakuti ku mpoto sikukangatuluke Presient. Mavoti a kumpoto konse amafanana ndi mavoti a boma la Chiradzulu lokha basi ndiye ife tidandaula chani. Go to hell

    1. Ambulaje,do not fool yourself that Chiradzulu,a tiny and poor district has more voters than the northern region. Are you telling me that your district is more populous than Mzimba the largest district in Malawi? It was Muluzi who inflated the census in Chiradzulu when Moyo was a DC so that he could amass so many votes in the south during his re-election. Matter of fact, the census in districts such as Thyolo, Mulanje,Phalombe and,Mangochi is exaggerated and needs revisiting and reviewing. You people have been stealing elections by inflating figures but what have your leaders done so far to Malawi? They have made it more poorer. Nothing good can come from the south, even in the bible it says it all,and even in a world city like Chicago, the south is full of violence and backward mentality. Talk of the north, wisdom, wisdom;it is just a fact.

  22. I am not an Afford member but MCP …but salute these wise people..and has been said…let’s work together to vote out this useless ..clueless. DPP government

  23. Though im yao but you the mbwenu’s make aford a party again. look at your town centre it is a shame that these hinyahinya’s are doing nothing to balance development. If you want a Yao president to take aford into Government email me im free and ready!

    1. We don’t email fools and dunderheads like you Mr Kholowa we don’t need you or your advise neithet your wrotten mind.

  24. Yes,the truth is and will remain that way. No northerner shall be the President of Malawi. Unless the individual is a member of DPP but not AFORD.mark my words.

  25. After all political affiliation is voluntary you can join and leave the party at any time of your wish. Political leaders be aware of this, be well prepared for the speech when preparing to stand before people do not just work up and start speaking anything. If a well written speech has finished just say God bless you all, wave your hand and sit down. This time people are civilized they want to hear sensible things and are aware that there is no need of staying and waiting for insults from party leaders who cannot manage their tongue and at the end receive party regalia which has no benefit for human development. Political leaders should learn a lesson from this scenario. Any leadership that wants to win people’s attention should be proactive not reactive. In the context of Malawi the leadership that wants to win people’s confidence should do the following: apply strict laws to corrupt members starting from top government officials to the grass root. This should be done openly regardless of status everyone should be able to face humiliation of the act no need of shielding some people because they are connected to leadership. This should stop if the leadership is to maintain credibility. It should remove quarter system of selection to university not to please some people but to restore high standard of education because whether one likes it or not education standard is compromised by quarter system. How can this be able to accommodate a high number of students who wants university education? the answer is simple just develop those community technical colleges in every constituency and make them be constuent colleges of university of Malawi like Chancellor College, Poly, College of Medicine and other. Where will the money for such come from? If the government can be serious the money cannot be a problem. Malawi has alot of money which is just wasted in people’s pockets. It should recruit all people who are trained eg teachers, nurses, doctors, name them who are just rotting at home while the government spent alot money to train them yet out there the same government is claiming that there is shortage of workers in hospitals, in schools and the like, it does not give sense. The government should find means and ways of stabilizing the currency by closing all holes of corruption. It should make sure that cost of living is comfortable even to those who have little income base. It should make sure that those who are in ministerial positions are there by merit not as a matter of appeasement. It should be able to hear the views of people no matter some views are against its expectations, learn to use some comments of people from the media such as Nyasatimes, zodiak, daily, times, Nations and other private media this will help the leadership to have balanced services. Add what you think the government of the day should do so that our country Malawi should be a good place to live in.

  26. Good riddance. This is fake news. In my opinion, the truth is always painful. Jefrey challenged Mwenefumbo from Karonga which is part of the northern region that he cannot win the presidential elections and this is realistic. I will add to say that the calibre of Kamlepo Kaluwa with his antics, Khumbo Kachale a wonderer and the likes. Are you sure with such characters you can win the presidential elections? That group is already Afford led by Chihana lady, they are pretending as if they are moving from DPP to AFORD. Just wait and watch the Land slide victory the DPP will achieve in 2019. Mark my words, as of now, I don’t see any political party that is currently competent enough to beat the DPP.

    1. Dende, others have ever challenged like this before!! In politics its dangerous to be overzealous!! in 1994 Damiano Malefula, the then MCP Zomba District Chairman told the Malawi nation through MBC radio one similar comments like yours, and challenged that if things would go contrary and MCP/Kamuzu looses, then anthu adzamudule mutu because Kamuzu and MCP to him could never loose!! But afterwards what happened? A Dendeeeeeeeee ndi ndale iziiiiiiiiiiiiii!!

Dende, you better check with Americans (and Clinton in particular), they will tell you the best thing to do with your comments in politics!! Some of us are just watching and keeping records on all this………………..!!

    2. You are dreaming in colour my friend. DPP is failing even by elections while in power and you talk of landslide victory in 2019? Mukonzekere kudzama temiki.

  27. Olo mutitithira Doom mmaso, AFORD singatuluse president. Mwachita bwino kuchoka musatinyase a mbwenumbwenu

  28. Anthu 150 ali kuti apa? Ngati mukulephera kupeza chithunzi choti muike patsambali ndiye nkumangotinamiza kuti anthu atuluka. Anthu ali ndi ufulu wolowa kapena wotuluka m’chipani

  29. DPP will continue to pay dearly for the un censored remarks by its members who think Malawi is for them only. Very soon Chitipa, Nkhatabay and Mzimba will follow

  30. Kukanakhala kuti anthuwa achoka mu zipani zotsutsa ndipo alowa mu dpp, kukanakhala phokoso pa tvm. Koma popeza achoka mu dpp ndipo alowa kotsutsa a tvm aviwika mpunga mkamwa akulephera kulankhula. That’s the type of being public broadcaster mbc calls itself.

  31. I once said that it was a good thing that the DPP SG uttered such sentiments because this is what the entire DPP believes in. Slowly but surely we will see numbers of this confused and self exhorted party called DPP losing membership. Kasaila will come and dismiss this as having no impact on the popularity of the party but I will tell you that a rude awakening awaits DPP similar to the one for JB in 2014. If APM has balls he should tell his SG to apologise . But knowing the pride in APM he will not do this just as is the case with his shielding of Chaponda.

  32. Revamp Aford Movement! Aford, Victoryyyyyy! This is good news for all well meaning Malawians – a strong Aford is very important for the socio-economic and political development of this country
