Mwawi blow for Malawi Queens for England test series: Sets conditions for NAM
Malawi’s sole netball export Mwawi Kumwenda’s will not join the Queens for training camp ahead of England international series this month unless the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) creates “a conducive environment” for her effective participation, she is not ready to return for national duty.
Mwawi’s cousin Hlupikire Chalamba, who acts as her manager and legal adviser, told Nyasa Times on Thursday evening that the netball star is “always excited and committed to represent Malawi and play with the Queens” but wants NAM to clear circumstances that led to her being expelled from the Queens camp ahead of the Fast5 World Netball series for late arrival in camp.
The shooter’s absence was heavily felt as evidenced by the team’s poor results.
Chalamba said unless NAM address the concerns that led to her being dropped, Mwawi will not return to the Queens.
“I have advised her to wait until we have a better understanding of what transpired during the last call up which led to her expulsion from camp,” Chalamba said.
She said the gangly goal shooter (GS) expulsion was dubious as she provided reasons beforehand for reporting late.
Chalamba said if NAM found her reasons to have been unacceptable, then they would have accorded her a chance to be “properly, fairly and impartially” heard before enforcing a decision to expel her.
“The fact that the coach himself [Samuel Kanyenda] was even surprised and against Mwawi’s expulsion raises even more deep concerns, because the coach himself (being part of the technical committee) should ordinarily have been the one to exercise such disciplinary oversight of his players,” Chalamba said, who has communicated the message to NAM in a letter.
“It therefore becomes worrying as to whether there may be other factors that resulted in such an arbitrary decision from NAM. In addition, the manner in which the decision was undertaken only served to further ridicule and stigmatize Mwawi.
“Specifically, NAM opted to publicly denounce Mwawi in front of her teammates and demanded her removal from camp. This is in spite of the fact that Mwawi had been earlier welcomed by the coach and had already commenced training with her teammates,” reads Chalamba’s letter which its authenticity has been verified with her.
“Throughout these twist of events, Mwawi and myself have nonetheless respected your decision, and we remained optimistic that we would have a two-way discussion surrounding this issue. To date, we have received nothing except your current call for camp reporting on Sunday, 12th November, 2017 and processing of UK Visa on Friday, 10th November, 2017. It is not currently clear whether the expulsion from the camp constituted a disciplinary action or Mwawi is yet to undergo formal disciplinary action,” further reafds the letter to NAM.
Chalamba said the kind of working relationship with NAM is “not healthy for Mwawi and even her teammates.”
Said Chalamba: “I am increasingly becoming uncomfortable with this continued tensions, especially considering that this is not the first time that we have had such concerning actions from your side. This is not the kind of environment that Mwawi or any other team member can thrive.”
Continued Chalamba: “For Mwawi and her team members to effectively perform, they need to play in a safe and comfortable environment- without fear of arbitrary decision makings. I therefore request that we first have an honest and reflective discussion to iron out these issues. We need to understand from you what happened, (including the manner in which you undertook your decisions) and how we can move forward amicably for the betterment of national interests that are at stake. “
Chalamba said she need “firm assurance” that the best interests of Mwawi and the Queens are well safeguarded by NAM before she retunrs to the national team’s fold.
However, NAM general secretary Carol Bapu yesterday expressed surprise at the manager’s stance.
Malawi team is scheduled to go into camp in Blantyre on November 12 ahead of the test series that will take place between November 24 and 29 in England.

It’s high time NAM accepted the reality and move without Mwawi. Because the way I see things, clinging to her sets a bad precedence and tomorrow one or more other players will do as Mwawi did. No matter how good you are but if discipline is not part of you, then that makes you worse-off than someone who is not a star. There is nothing to discuss here, it’s either she obeys or not. Malawi should learn to move on without Mwawi. There were better players before her, they came and they went. Fodya wako ndi yemwe ali pa mphuno wapachala ngwamphepo. If Malawi loses one Mwawi, we stand to gain two Mwawis.

Enermy of Mwai has already said she is not bigger than NAM or team please guys leave this lady alone she has not begged you to join the national team it is you who need her service. Let her not go because of wanting to be bigger than the Netball Association. Like the way she was identified and groomed to be a star, we will find many similar netball stars but disciplined. mwawi is right Theres alot to e desired at NAM the way they do things. Mwawi is a professional player she cant be treated like anyone and only the coach decides on who is to be expelled or not. in football we had mtawali who could come straight from RSA into the game without training with his friends thats what make a professional, mwawi is the same. NAM did not buy her a ticket to come to Malawi, on her holiday she could’ve stayed where she was so NAM dont take advantage of her. MWAwi stay until they tell you what exactly they want from you.
Mwayi is selfish. She does not want to play under Mary Waya which is not only bad but also disappointing. First it was poor communication. Now its because she was not appologized. Why Mwayi is doing all these shits. Even if this is corrected Mwayi will come with different version of complaints. I think she has not a good adviser but a family member who is spoiling her future.This is a total verbal war between Mwayi and NAM. NAM should ignore Mwayi for good even the future games and remove any relation ship between them. Player can not be bigger than her country. All Malawians need Malawi. I thought mwawi was expelled on discipline issues. That was how it was supposed to be. So what conducive environment is she looking for? If she doesn’t want to play let her go in peace. Why all this matukutuku? Is she the only valuable player? Let her go. A replacement will be found.

If this is the way NAM will be managed, the next time we will check the netball rankings Malawi Queens will be position 20. I just don’t know why it is always difficult for women to manage and uplift fellow women. Instead of uplifting each other they are always pulling each other down. May be we should have men in NAM Management.

I remember that NAM were at the forefront to stop Mwayi going to Australia some years ago. If it was not for your efforts, Mwayi would not have made it there.

For once let’s burry our hatchets and look at Malawi as the bigger picture. I know someone somehwere within the corridors of power of NAM is bigger than netball itself. But if we continue politicking Malawi netball will be the biggest loser. Whoever made the decision at MAM should meet Mwayi’s manager and have a one on one discussion and map the way forward. The nation cannot be held to ransom over petty netball power politics. Mwayi come and join the Queens leave politics to your manager and NAM Executive that is my take.
NAM always buries the hatchets but it always mark the spot where they are buried. That’s the danger. Hence NAM’s onslaught on the same player for petty reasons. She reported for training though late but with reasons. Only for Carol and Company speeding to the venue to order out.

Mr Chalamba thank you. When you find people following up issues like this it gives confidence that there is still hope for the redemption of the country. When I read Mwawi is coming back just like that, no follow up nothing. I said yes indeed foolishness is entrenched in this Nation. But now we have you talking. Please you are not representing Mwawi only. It is NAM vs the Nation. Foolishness must be looted out of our country anywhere it is found.That is more important than a positive result in UK.
