Mutharika ‘shocked’ and ‘saddened’ with another terrible accident
President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the First Lady Dr Gertrude Mutharika have expressed great shock and sadness over the death of four students who died in a road accident at Nazipulu bridge near Ntakataka in Dedza district.
The First Couple has since called upon all Malawians to join them in praying for the lives lost and the families that have lost loved ones in the tragic accident.
Meanwhile, President Mutharika has instructed government to quickly provide the necessary support to all the affected families and those injured.
The students were coming from Malawi University Of Science and Technology (MUST) where they participated in the quarterfinals of the National Bank Mo626 National College Championiship which took place on 25th November 2017.
Four students died on the spot and several others sustained injuries and were rushed to Dedza District Hospital.
They were travelling in a Toyota Coaster registration number BS 8599 with 39 passengers on board.
Upon arrival at Nazipulu bridge in Dedza district, the driver, identified as 39 year-old Stefano Kamowa, from Timoti village, Traditional Authority Masasa in Ntcheu district, lost control of the vehicle due to over speeding, then it swerved to the right lane where he hit metal bars of the bridge, then the coaster overturned before felling into a river.
The deceased have been identified as Winnie Yolodani Mwale; Osward Chimangeni, Moses Mzumala and Aggie Kanyemba.
Fourteen passengers sustained serious injuries while 21 passengers and the driver sustained minor injuries.
The motor vehicle got extensively damaged, according to Mtakataka Police.
