Malawi Parliament to discuss electoral reforms bill Thursday: No Private Members’ business
Speaker of Malawi Parliament Richard Msowoya has announced that the House will dedicate Thursday which is normally reserved for Private Members’ Bill, to discuss the Electoral Reforms Bills.
Msowoya announced that the whole Thursday and Friday will be dedicated to the Electoral Reforms Bills.
“There will be no Private Members’ business and the whole day will be dedicated to this [the Electoral Reforms Bills],” said Msowoya in his announcement.
But there has been no indication if the House sitting will be extended as requested by the opposition to allow ample time for MPs to scrutinise the Bills.
Msowoya said the Business Committee – which comprises leaders of political parties represented in Parliament and sets out the agenda for the House – will meet after Thursday’s deliberations “to asses progress”.
“On Friday, the House will sit the whole day to make sure that all the Bills are passed,” the Speaker said.
Normaly, on Friday the House meets from 9.30 am to 12:30PM but MPs will suspend relevant standing orders for business to go unusual.
