Aford-Mwenifumbo holds NGC meeting

Alliance for Democracy (Aford) faction led by Karonga Central MP Frank Mwenifumbo held its first ever national governing council (NGC) meeting in Mzuzu with delegates extending an olive branch to Enoch Chihana- the president of another Afird faction.

Mwenifumbo leads Aford

Aford-Mwenifumbo party spokesperson Dan Msowoya said in an interview the delegates decided to reach out to Chihana inorder to unite and make a good showing in the forthcoming 2019 election.

“What the delegates said is that Honourable Chihana should be part of us; since he has been part of a problem to Aford, the NGC felt he can be part of a solution to the problem,” he said.

Msowoya said Chihana should not take Aford as a personal estate of self enrichment.

The Chihana Aford does not recognise the Mwenifumbo Aford faction and told Mwenifumbo and his supporters that they risk a court action should they continue using party emblems and colours.

Chihana could not be reached for comment as he is reportedly now based in South Africa but his spokesperson Khumbo Munyenyembe described the Mwenifumbo Aford as illegal.

Msowoya said the NGC looked at how best to win the election in 2019.

“With Honourable Mwenifumbo at the helm, we see a visionary leader, a leader who will bring Aford to victory,” he said.

But the vice president in Chihana’s camp, Precious Chisi rubbished the ideas saying Mwenifumbo has no right to make decisions on Aford matters. He also rebuffed Mwenifumbo on reunion, saying as far as he and others are concerned, Mwenifumbo and his camp are not Aford.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu University Aford wing has thrown its weight behind Chihana saying Mwenifumbo and his camp are being paid to bring confusion in the party.

Aford, under its founding leader trade unionist Chakufwa Chihana had 33 seats in parliament in 1994 has a single parliamentary seat won in 2014 under Enoch Chihana.
