Electoral stakeholders meeting July 17 to decide voter registration fate
Resolutions by key stakeholders in electoral process at the forthcoming National Consultative Forum (NECOF) meeting slated for July 17 in Lilongwe are expected to determine the fate of the first phase of voter registration exercise.
The development comes amid concerns by some political parties and civil society organizations calling upon the county’s chief pollster to extend the first phase of voter registration which was marred by a low turnout.
Speaking after a meeting with opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr Lazarus Chakwera in Blantyre, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr Jane Ansah said the commission has received various complaints regarding the exercise which was held in Kasungu, Dedza and Salima districts.
Ansah said: “As MEC chairperson I don’t make decisions alone, resolutions of the commission are made by a consensus so will take up the complaints to the commissioners and consult other key stakeholders and see on how best we can address them”.
‘’After a NECOF meeting the commission will meet to discuss on the resolutions by the stakeholders and chart on the way forward regarding the first phase of the voter registration,”. addedAnsah.
The MEC Chairperson said the commission will proceed with the second phase of the exercise which starts on Friday July 13 in the central region districts of Mchinji, Nkhota kota , Dowa and Ntchisi.
She said: “At the moment it’s premature to establish the cause for a low turnout during voter registration but as the exercise progresses we will be able to identify it and we are going to address it accordingly.”
The voter registration exercise in readiness for the May 2019 tripartite elections is being conducted in phases and is targeting over 9 million voters.

I think MEC commissioners have been promised huge sums of money if they succeed in this rigging. But Dr. Ansar should recall how her predecessor ended. Late Mbendera betrayed this nation, we’re suffering, but he never enjoyed the harvest of his cheating he died the death of a pig.
Let M.E.C go to South why is it much dealing with Central? these idiots are not going to make this coming Election free and fair, mark my words! Someone opposed me that there will be fighting in this Country, War and or fighting start when there is miscommunication and or misunderstandings, as you can see and or hear what these Commission team are saying, its just lame reasons of not reopen the Centers, this may lead people not to understand them, remember this is National Exercise not for any party and or any tribe. The registration should be taking place in all three regions at the same time. One district in each region simultaneously.
It is very clear that Jane Ansah is collaborating with DPP to rig elections. Jane do not forget that people do not live forever. Anastasia Msosa is now in retirement and you will soon follow her. Death follows thereafter. Please make Malawi a better place for our children. You are older than Bona and Jolly and possibly approaching if not more that 60 and you must lead by example. We should try the courts if this woman remains stubborn or adamant. DPP is going around snatching IDs from people so that they do not register.
This phases strategy by the pollster is non starter and it does inspire Malawians as a result Malawians are losing hope with the leadership of MEC. Jane Anser should be careful in handling this fiasco registration and therefore quick action to address the concerns is needed here in order for Malawians to trust MEC. We do not want chaos during elections because of rigging strategies put in place to register few people in the Centre and concentrate in the south that is dangerous as far as democracy attained in 1993 is concerned.
