Thyolo man vouches for Chakwera to be next Malawi leader on Times Radio: ‘MCP president has been pointing out about  DPP thieves’

In  phone-in programme on Times Radio presented by Brian Banda, a certain Mr Chipwete who gave his address as “at the barbershop, Thunga, Thyolo” had interesting things to say. Don’t shoot the messenger. Various parties can see what they take away from this and retool their messages accordingly.

Chakwera: MCP is the future to believe in

MR CHIPWETE: Let’s just give the keys of power to [MCP president Lazarous]  Chakwera. If he lets us down, we will take it from there. But all these others are birds of the same feather – they are thieves.

BRIAN BANDA: What makes you say so?

MR CHIPWETE: What I’m saying is: you’ve  been in there for four years – they went in together, right? – so they have been together all these four years. He ate first year and said nothing; ate second year and said nothing; ate third year and said nothing; and for him to realise just now that what he has been eating is rotten I can’t buy that! To me, they are all thieves. And this man has come with threats. “Know you’re thieves,” he says. “I know you plan to steal elections. You can’t beat us at the game.” It’s like telling us he is an expert at rigging. Don’t forget that the Reverend [Chakwera] has been complaining all along that the election was stolen from him, and this guy says he knows a lot about rigging. The question is: if you mean well, why don’t you explain to us how the election was stolen? So, he just wants to deceive us that he is clean. However, as you can see, even that image is already battered because he has surrounded himself with the same thieves. Some have a really bad image, others are still answering cases in court . . .

BRIAN BANDA: I implore you, please, let us not mention names.

MR CHIPWETE: My apologies, Brian, but all I wanted was to say the truth. The team he is at the helm of, some of the members are answering cases at the Anti-Corruption Bureau. They stole money and they are answering charges and these are the people he has taken on board and says, “Let’s go and transform the country.” Does he take us for granted? Does he think we can leave a reverend who has been fighting for us for four years? From the day he set foot in parliament, Dr Chakwera has been talking tough against corruption, pointing out that these are thieves. He even went so far as tabling a bill for the independence of the ACB, and these very same people shot it down. So what transformation will they bring, Brian? Nothing will change at all. Let them just be honest and say, “Look, the gravy train has left us behind. It’s only the chosen few who are now eating. We have jumped ship because of that.” That is the truth. But for them to start telling us, “We are clean,” I can’t buy that. Where were they all these four years? So let them not deceive us. If they want to dress smartly, let them. If they want to march on our roads, let them. But deceiving us? Noooo. The Malawian of today is a different kind of Malawian, knowledgeable and not easily deceived.

BRIAN BANDA: If you talk of dressing smartly, why doesn’t MCP just do the same?

MR CHIPWETE: Dressing smartly is not a bad thing, Brian. All I’m saying is the decency should emanate from the depth of your heart. But if you just look great on the outside but your heart is not clean, what good is that? He led reform. Did we see those reforms touch the Anti-Corruption Bureau? He was the one leading reforms, lest we forget. Not a single day did we hear him say, “I want, as part of these reforms, that the ACB should be independent.” What was reform all about? Wasn’t he supposed to push for such things? Now for him to come and say, Oh no, but if you elect me next year I’ll bring change, why not bring change now? Isn’t he still right there in the government? Isn’t he still Vice President of Malawi? Why not bring that change now? Everything that has been going on all along, wasn’t he a member of the cabinet? Why hoodwink us now? I want Malawians whether here in Thyolo, Lilongwe, Chitipa to know that these people have not changed, they are same old same old. Wasn’t he, only recently, interested in running for president of the ruling party? Hasn’t he formed his own because he realized it was an impossible task to topple his boss? Now, suppose he had been given the presidency of the ruling party, could he have been telling us all this about the ruling party’s theft? So, today, just because he has launched his own outfit, he should appear to be an angel? No, no, no. These are birds of the same feather.

  • Like I said, don’t shoot the messenger. If I were UTM, this feedback would be helpful to reshape the message and address concerns of people like Mr Chipwete. If I was MCP, I would seek Mr Chipwete out and see how to make him a more formidable force in campaigning for the party around his area. If I was DPP, I would realise that even in the party’s heartland, the opposition is building in-roads, and I would want to come up with strategies to win back the support of the likes of Mr Chipwete. Anyway, I am none of these. I belong to Khumbo Kachale’s party. We will transform Malawi.

By wearing your shirt inside out does not mean you changed your shirt. Chakwera is surrounded by people from PP and already has been contaminated and is using stolen money in cashgate.

For development sake, people have to earn money and not getting money without any work done for it. How can Malawi develop? It is better if you have lost grip with a party, better retire. In all, I do not see any good reasons for leaving a particular party and then forming another one. Same people, with known scandals, other with cases in courts.     1. APM was not his boss. Its an elected position and his accountability was to the Malawian people. And he could report things to ACB without revealing his identity. Unless he can say he sent tips to ACB and they never acted on them. To say he was scared is silly. How are these other stories revealed to ACB. There is anonymous tip which people use to whistleblow on corruption. He could have used those. Moreover that was going to be more effective as maybe by now all thieves would have been caught. Chakwera and even the US Ambassador spoke about the Gensets tender and he was quiet. Couldnt he have helped the ACB? In other words he was an enabler because there are other little people who have risked their careers to report the rot at Admarc, Escom, Capital Hill, Macra etc……

  21. For me, MCP and its eadership has failed to impress for the past four years. Being a big party and holding the leadership of oppostion, I expect the pastor and his team to have been more vilagint in holding accountable the government, speaking of the vices, and providing solutions. The current status of thievely and corruption is a manifestation of weak system. and lack of leadershipincluding the biggest pposition party. MCP has failed to big time to speak and act for Malawians, I mean the kind of the noise which I was expecting from a big opposition party. SCK is speaking what we want to hear, me and my family shall give him a chance. We know very well how DPP did not give him a chance, never being in a member of DPP NGC. He was considered an outside and was just used to win the election through the youth vote.

  24. I have my reservations against Chilima & UTM. Mr. CHIPWETE is far much better & objective than our university based political analysts.
    Kaliati is bitter & frastrated cos she never held a ministerial post in Peter’s admn, just as Kalindo. They were ignored. Power hungry!

    The so called chairman of UTM has issues with Peter & the president revealed that he was awarded a contract to construct Thyolo council offices.

    Chilima being VP had all it takes to do the needful as a change agent within Dpp not waiting to form hs UTM.

  28. The bottom line is SKC himself some of the funding from UTM is coming from people from DPP. So what happens next is by May 2019, if mbava zonse go to UTM and DPP is only left to APM, Goodall, Chaponda and a few Ben Phiri’s, will corruption end. UTM now as it is, is being built by people from DPP who are stealing. So basically a Pumbwa akaba ku Escom next month, the money will go to UTM and not DPP. Thats the only thing that has transformed. If we probe Masangwi’s contracts, which one even APM himself said “ndinampatsa contract ya K2.5bn” is it going to be a contract that was awarded fairly? This is the major problem with SKC, he will do anything for money as long as it propels him to somewhere. He left airtel because his contract was not going to be renewed (albeit because he cant kiss an indians behind just to be a figurehead CEO), and agreed that if they pay him enough cash, he will help DPP win the elections, and if they really win, he will be paid, which he hasn’t been paid up to now. There is a reason why this noise started with the Callistas and its because they know where the deal soured.

  38. The same Chakwera who happily shared the MK4 billion before marching against it with the CSOs? You trust that Chakwera? The same MCP of murder, blood and darkness that terrorised our people and killed with disregard for 30 years? The same Chakwera who sold his party for MK200 million to Sidik Mia? Most of these MCP cadres were also in full support of the dictatorship and voted against multiparty in the referendum. You want us to support those over Chilima?

    Do people really think people who are supporting UTM dont know that Chilima is VP? Of course we know, but it makes no difference because he was never given any power. His record in the current administration is actually great as he performed brilliantly leading the reforms, he performed so well that DPP took the role away from him and shelved the reforms which were aimed at closing some loopholes that lead to corruption. His performance under the disaster and recovery portfolio was also excellent. That is his record in the current administration and that is why people are trusting in him because he has shown that he is a man that can deliver.

    So, lets be more analytical in our thinking. Mr Chipwete as an MCP supporter made his argument to suit his politics and chose to ignore major facts. Malawian are a little bit more sophisticated than that.

    By the way, we know Reverend Chakwera, we have known him since he was failing to account for building mansions and driving expensive cars at his Mission, he doesnt inspire us and won’t do so now.

        And Chakwamba’s rejoining MCP after his release from prison has nothing to do with subject at hand; dzukani inu – you don’t know that Kamuzu released Chakuamba only after he agreed to rejoin MCP, rather than diss it?
        Big man is wrong though in propagating the myth of the bus company – UTM – will speed past everyone. It will be running out of gas sooner than he thinks. Ma gear athyoka posachedwa, and those who are preparing for a marathon will prevail.

    When Chakwera stood in Parliament and said DPP is full of thieves, Kaliati, Bon Kalindo, Allan Ngumuya and team all said No, Dr. Chakwera informed the Nation that there is corruption at ESCOM, Chilima, Kaliati, Winiko and UTM team all defended DPP and said Chakwera is just frustrated because he is in opposition.

    Indeed Chakwera stood for Malawians all the past 4 years! He spoke about bad governance and corruption…..

    Today, UTM is talking about DPP evils just to get positions because of frustrations. Dr. Chilima, if you were given a chance to stand for DPP you would continue to defend thieves..

    You cannot transform this country..

Mr. Chipwete is wiser than most of the educated fools who are following Chilima and the other thugs dumped by dpp. Surely Chilima is bitter man and surely he could not have been saying all bad things about dpp had he been given a chance to take over. Any wise person cannot take what Chilima is saying seriously except the theft by the dpp. Creating one million jobs is a joke and tactic used by Bakili to fool Malawians. Chilima should produced minutes of the meeting in which he condemned the quota system of education. He never advised Alamu Pumani Mwakalamba to stop the quota system. Surprisingly some northerners atengeka kale as usual. Chilima is also abusing tax payers money or our money for campaigns. Already it shows how useless he is. Joyce Banda was not as wasteful as Chilima when she was fired by Bingu to form her fast fading PP. Chilima is greedy. Chilima lately refused to take a petition by CSOs an indication that he was fully in dpp. Why should he look a saint today as Chipwete put it? Bakili said a Malawi sachedwa kuyuwala. Bravo Chipwete.   50. Who said that Mutharika is a Prince of Thieves? Who first told Malawians about the Generator procurement scandal at Escom? It was Chakwera. And what did Chilima and UTM team say at that time? They were quiet; busy enjoying proceeds of corruption. And Chilima confirmed last weekend that some people in DPP are among the funders of UTM. Chilima and team are banking on the assumed gullibility and stupidity of Malawians. Unfortunately, that may be a miscalculation because Malawians know that Chakwera has been fighting for them for past 4 years while Chilima and team were busy enjoying proceeds of corruption.
