Mzuni coach eyes three wins to beat the drop

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) football club coach, Gilbert Chirwa says his team must win at least three games in order to survive relegation in the elite TNM Super League this season.

Mzuni are currently stuck on position fourteen with 21 points despite registering a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Dwangwa United on Saturday.

The ‘Green Intellectuals’ coach Gilbert Chirwa said the team is currently doing well after registering two back –to- back wins in their last two matches against Civil Sporting and Dwangwa United football clubs.

“We need to win about three games out of a possible nine and further hope that our competitors falter on their way.

“It is quite possible to achieve that feat because we have played a lot of games away and we have many games home which will work to our advantage,” said Chirwa.

The seasoned mentor further pointed out that his team has been playing well all through only that scoring has been letting them down.

“We have been working out on scoring as well as on match fitness and I’m glad that slowly the team has been finding the back of the net in all our matches which is very crucial in our quest to survive the chop in the league,” he said.

Commenting on the match against Dwangwa, Chirwa said the game was very tough as Dwangwa held Mzuni to a barren draw till recess, but through his tactical changes, Mzuni managed to score two goals in the second half.

“We actually encouraged the boys in the second half not to lose hope with the first half frustrations and we were paid off in the second half as we scored two fantastic goals.

“We will just encourage the players not to be carried away by these two wins but rather fight on so that we get the three wins we need and see how best we can move towards surviving in the top flight league,” said Chirwa.

Dwangwa United team manager, Dave Mwandira, said despite his team’s defeat to Mzuni, his team will fight hard in order to remain in the league.

Dwangwa United are on position 13  with 23 points having played 19 games just as Mzuni.
