National Statistical Office (NSO) said on Friday that the country’s annual consumer inflation quickened to 7.4 percent in July from 7.0 percent in June.
“The year on year headline inflation for the month of July 2011 stands at 7.4 percent, an increase of 0.4 percentage points on the month before,” the NSO said in a statement posted on its website.
“The urban and rural rates are 9.3 percent and 6.3 percent respectively,” the statement added.
NSO further said that: “Although food inflation has gone down by 2.4 percent, its impact has not been strong enough to halt the turnaround in headline inflation whose direction has been influenced by upward changes in non-food inflation.”
Malawi’s inflation is largely moved by the availability of food which contributes to about 58.1 per cent to the Consumer Price Index.
