Malawi maize surplus at 300 000 metric tons — Mwanamvekha

Malawi Government has projected a maize surplus of 300 000 metric tonnes this year with first round crop estimates indicate that Malawi will harvest 3.3 million metric tonnes of maize in 2018/19.

Mwanamvekha: Malawi will harvest 3.3 million metric tonnes of maize

The the harvest is up from the final estimate of 2.6 million metric tonnes in 2017/18.

Minister of Agriculture Joseph Mwanamvekha said the surplus is on the back of government’s Farm Input Subsidy Programme (Fisp) and the Green Belt Initiative, among other factors.

He has also attributed the increase to good rains experienced between December and February.

The national maize requirement is 3 million metric tonnes.

In recent years, the country has been recording back-to-back years of bumper maize harvests largely because of fertiliser subsidies.

A chimulirenji, your projections are based on faulty analogy. Can you tell us how you came up with that figure. Who are the data scientist that quantified this figure? I am asking these questions bcoz I know what happens in fields. Azilangizi ndimabwana awo amangolemba mafigure oti akusabgalatseni mmaso mwanu.

Surely this is good news for the country. Above all favorable weather condition which include good rains should be attributed to extra maize surplus. It is God who provides us with food by way of good harvest. Last harvest season fertilizer subsidy program was there but we all know rains were not favorable in most parts of the country. Let church leaders arrange for prayers to thank God for goods rains and food this farming season

Reduce price in the Admarc so new maize could be bought .In this way Farmers could chance market for their maize this season

Mechanisims should be put in place for orderly export of this surplus for those who shall bring back the forex back into Malawi.

The same needs to be done for all the other crops. There will be wxcess of most crops.

This is where Admarc needs to function to buy the excess to ensure market prices do not crash and negatively affect the farmer.

We praise God for the great rains.
