DPP shun debates: Mutharika, Chimulirenji not taking part

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has officially announced that it will not take part in any Presidential and running mate debates organised to give platform to political parties to outline vision and developments in store for Malawi once voted into power come 21st May 2019.

The party disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement signed by its Secretary General Greizedar Jefrey.

“The Democratic Progressive Party would like to inform the general public that it will continue to not participate in presidential and running-mates debates related to May elections as conducted by some media institutions” reads part of the statement seen by Nyasa Times.

The party said it has arrived at the decision because it has reservations about the integrity of the organisation and debators.

The statement further informs DPP followers and Malawians in general that it will continue to use other channels to communicate its developmental programmes for the nation and how it is attending ton the welfare of its people.

The statement also encourages Malawians to keep on engaging with the party and to fulfil its vision of moving Malawi from poverty to prosperity.

The communication not to take part in debates comes about a week after the party running mate failed to show up at a debate which was organised by private broadcaster Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) in conjunction with other stakeholders.

  3. The truth is that the DPP simply doesn’t care about Malawians! Ngati mwapanga deliver on your 2014 manifesto, why not go to the debate and explain what you have done since 2014 and your plans for 2019 to 2024? Kuba, kuzunza anthu, makani and nepotism is all that the DPP knows. Muli anthu abwino mu DPP who can ably lead and sell the party but are not being given the chance. Not these empty teens going around telling Malawi is now developed like Europe chifukwa choti iwo alemera ndi zokuba. Rest in peace DPP.

  4. I think chakuwawani kuti you have lost the opportunity to insult them as pre planned. Because if it were genuine debate, then you would have been happy kuti you will articulate your ideas unchallenged, uninterrupted or unopposed.   5. Manchester United can not debate with Nyasa Bullets on how to play football. It will be a shame to MAN U. Its good idea for DPP and Strategically correct. Position number one student at one school is not position number one at another school. Ntchito za manja a DPP ziwachitile umboni kaya ndizoyipa kaya ndizabwino tidzawona pa 21 May. But for the opposition you can debate because ntchito za manja anu palibe akuziziwa.

  8. I just googled leaders or presidential debates and found on wikipedia less than 25 countries hold public presidential debates.
    In a small country like Malawi where a presidential candidate can manage to visit all 193 constituents I find it not logical for somebody to be given one minute to advance various policies they have for the country.
    In USA presidential debates a crucial because the country is vast so that none can manage to campaign even just a quarter of the country so that the other 3 quarters can only manage to compare the only two presidential during the debates.
    Osamangotengera zinthuzi. After all i doubt if Malawi has more than 100,000 TV decoders be it kiliyekiliye, multi choice, free to air , etc and over 50% of them are in bottles where people watch soccer or belong to foreigners who can’t watch local TV. The impact on the proposed debates to swing the vote is almost zero.

  17. The only way to answer the critics after the dpp debacles is to stand up and show no fear and hesitation. Now you justify what everyone suspects by running into the shadows and hiding. If your policies are genuine prove the integrity of the institutions wrong and embarrass them in front of malawi. Instead you accuse them of targeting you and run with your tails between your legs.   30. They have no issues of national benefit to articulate and they are worried of being embarrassed by SKC. They just want to use all their energy to scheme ways of rigging the elections in order to hold on to power. This is the only explanation one can give.   44. Nothing strange even PP only attended one debate and it was Gwengwe but Joyce never attended any. Theway it happened last time it can be concluded that attendants were to embarass Chimulirenji thats why when he did not show up they started singing against him; this was bad. So DPP u r right wovota ndi a malawi wosati debate ayi and not what is promised on those debates shall come to pass. Therefore, just concentrate with campaign to electorates and continue with developments taking place ife tikuwona and we shall cast vote for you.

  49. Great, I also had some serious reservation with the debate organizers, they ate tilting towards some candidates. Even the questions were all concentrating on negatives and no any positive. And aimed at humiliating others. So too was the audience. More over rumous that questions were leaked to some debetors were lingering around. That was not even a debate but campaign podium. Debate is about proposing and opposing ideas, critically analysing pros and cons of ideas basing on evidence, facts and/or figures. That was a podium for people to explain what they will do if erected not debating. It was time wastage and rubbish.
