HRDC insists on Malawi airports shutdown: Lawyers working to clear court injunction

Officials from Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) say their lawyers are working to clear a court injunction which the state obtained to stop the anti-Jane Ansah protests in airports and borders.

Protesters took to the streets of Lilongwe again Friday for the fourth consecutive day, as they demand the resignation of Jane Ansah at MEC
HRDC has built a protest movement focused on Ansah, who they believe rigged the election in Mutharika’s favor. That’s broadened into a political voice on other issues, including HRDC opposition to a pending inspector general appointment.

Revenue collectors, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) obtained the injunction against HRDC, saying such protests would negatively affect revenue collection of the organization.

HRDC official Macdonald Sembereka said his organization wants to engage another gear to force the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah resign.

“Our lawyers are working hard to remove the injunction so that we go and protest in airports and boarders, probably that would force Ansah out of office,” said Sembereka.

Sembereka’s comments come at a time when some people say the current wave of protests are doing nothing to force Ansah out of office, saying the HRDC needed to explore other ways of forcing her to resign.

HRDC and opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM say the 2019 presidential polls were highly manipulated in favour of President Peter Mutharika, an allegation denied by Mutharika, MEC and the government.

The grouping is aware of the huge negative impact the airport and border shutdown will have on the country’s economy butsaid that should propel President Mutharika, as the appointing authority, to fire Jane Ansah as Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson.

President Mutharika recently told BBC that he will not fire Ansah and the  embattled MEC chairperson has also refused to resign.

  2. I am now starting to believe that this clown called Mtambo is not a Malawian. He might possibly have inherited that name after trekking from the then war torn Burundi through Kenya/Tanzania then settled in Chitipa. I am saying this because of these two reasons:
    1. There was a period when we were told that his uncle (Binwell Mtambo) died after being run over by a police vehicle. I went to school with Binwell, when he was in Form 2, I was in Form 1.Being dull he failed his JC. He came from Chitipa but spoke Chichewa very well.
    2. This Mtambo (The Demonstrations-in- chief) was at a funeral a couple of days ago following the death of a person he contributed to his demise. Surprisingly, this funeral was held in the north where Tumbuka is spoken locally, he apparently is telling us that he comes from Chitipa. Instead of addressing the gathering at the funeral in Tumbuka, a language conversant with 3/4s of the people there, he chose to speak in Chichewa, why? I will tell you: this person is a fraudster who is not conversant with either Chichewa or Lambya. He knows a bit of Chewa because he went for his education at Chanco, hence a slight understanding of the language. Any language from Karonga/Chitipa is Chinese to him.
    Make own conclusions from the simple research I have undertaken. Leave it or take it, it’s up to you. I’ve said my OWN!!! This Mtambo wants to leave the country burning, he is a cheat!!

Neither the mwaulambians including all 11 deferential languages in chitipa nor the nkhonde’s from karonga district even the tumbuka from nkhamanga kingdom rumphi district, the ngoni’s from mzimba and the tonga’s from nkhata-bay will be good in your so called chewa that’s a total lie you can tell your fellow chewa’s from mulanje and thyolo either from if all the southerners either from nsanje chikwawa zomba machinga mangochi can be good in in lomwe or mixed called chewa’s. I hate tribalism nonsense

    As of now it seems he is sleeping on his Job.

    We need a leader who should also listen to peoples demand not someone who lacks leadership skills.

    Autocratic style of leadership is long gone and now we are in multiparty dispensation which means people have more say in governance than the leader himself.

    Dont divide Malawians, some of us Married to Northern region and some to Central which means we are one Malawi.

    Anyone bringing division should rather resign if he is a leader than dividing our family.

    GOM please take our pleas seriously. Demonstrations on the airports and borders will not solve the resignations of Jane Ansah. This is something else that is leading to the Destruction of Malawi. AND must be stopped legal or not.

    1. Who cares about those small borders? If we cut off KIA, Songwe, Dedza, Biriwiri, Mchinji and others then we are done. There is little that comes through that parasitic region of Lhomwes. Infact, you cant survive without the other two regions. The only vibrant industry you have is baby manufacturing nothing else. Kamuzu gave you Makata and Chirimba to give you jobs but you destroyed that with much ease.

He that says is ever in contact with his Lord why does he go to the street and not to the office of his worship and tell his Lord his grave concerns as Jesus the son of Mary and his disciples went up there to ask the all Might God to resolve the problem he encountered. Is Sembereka and Chakwera as they claim to be servants of God indeed in contact with their God as they pledged before Him when they took their initial respective offices of worship .Chakwera fasted for number of days. What was the answer from GOD. If one has faith in God does not loss heart what he asks his Lord to give him. Even if one brings the world population to support him for his course it shall not be fulfilled, unless the wonderful God approves it. Follow your prayers keening one day God shall give you the right answer.
