Malawi president Mutharika warns of power struggle in ruling DPP
President Peter Mutharika has warned of power struggle in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ahead of his retirement as party head in 2023.
Mutharika said this on Sunday on arrival in Blantyre where he is expected to preside over a number of official engagements in the south.
“You must exercise patience, love one another. Avoid this internal power struggle for the party leadership,” he said.
He then advised those vying for the top party leadership to prepare for the 2023 national convention where he said delegates will choose the appropriate leader.
Power struggle for the party leadership is silently raging with the Agriculture minister Kondwani Nankhumwa coming as front runner.
Others include vice president Everton Chimulirenji and Justice minister Bright Msaka amid reports that Local government minister Ben Phiri has decided to support the candidacy of Chimulirenji in retain for the vice presidency.
Mutharika told the DPP leaders and supporters to allow members of other parties to join or rejoin the DPP.
He however angered the opposition when he called them a nyaphapi who are bent to destroy the country.
Mutharika, a second later, called for unity among Malawians, saying the country is now past the elections which he claimed the DPP won.
There is no way Dpp can be stronger after this case! People have lost hope for this party, president and cabinet. Believe or not devided is coming into this Dpp soon after case and l don’t see any person who can stand and bring Dpp back in power after case.
Peter Mutharika stop acting like you never went to school. Just few days ago when you were coming from Russia you asked the opposition for dialogue, today you’re calling the same people “anyapapi” shame on you. So what is the meaning of this dialogue, fooling Russians who gave you the advice may be ???

What I note from this article is that the alleged power struggle is mainly among Lhomwes. Jeffrey, Dausi Japie, Kutsaira, Kasaila etc, ndioperekeza chabe. I am not DPP but given a choice, I would support Nankhumwa. Chimulirenji is wasting time unless he is a front for the first lady who, it would seem, is habouring ambitions to be lead the country just like Grace Mugabe. These President’s wives never learn.

Perhaps it is his age, but APM seems to have forgotten what went on when his brother, the late Bingu, passed away. He himself attempted to step into his shoes and was accused of treason. We forget, or ignore, history at our peril.
