Malawi Queens coach Kaliati resigns
Coach for Malawi national netball team, the Queens, Edith Kaliati has resigned. She has also quit as mentor of MTL Queens club paving way for a new generation of coaches to show their skills.
Kaliati, who took over Malawi Queens from Escom Sisters coach Griffin ‘Zagalo’ Saenda in 2008 told The Nation in her single-page letter dated March 16 2012 that, “ Please be informed that in August 2011 I retired voluntarily from service of my employer, the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, after working for 33 years . It is with great joy and regret at the same time, that l have to inform you that with immediate effect l have retired from sports as coach of the Malawi national netball team.”
Kaliati also went on to states that she is done with MTL Queens having coached the netball out-fit for many years.
The coach who holds A grade coaching certificate outlines that it is time for her to hang up the coaching role and let young and upcoming coaches to lead the train.
Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Hellen Mpinganjira, who was shocked with the news, said as NAM they will discuss the next course of action.
However, Mpinganjira described the development as sad because Kaliati was well experienced and well qualified for her job.
“As of now l cannot comment much because we have to decide and talk to her first. But this is a sad development to the netball fraternity,” said Mpinganjira.
During her tenure at MTL, Kaliati introduced a number of young and upcoming players in the likes of Thandi Mwale, Rianna Mtenje, Joana Kachilika, Pilirani and Memory Mwazani.
However, it is not yet known who will succeed Kaliati as MTL Queens.
But the likely candidate to take over the mantle is MTL Queens evergreen shooter Mary ‘Atcheya’ Waya, who is also Malawi Queens Under-20 coach.
Waya is currently coaching in Tanzania.
